What some here do is remove the abdomen and degrease it separately, then glue it back on once the moth is spread. Alternatively you can degrease the whole moth before you spread it.

Nice bugs Bill! Watch it with the Syntherata though, I believe they have recently been split into about 3 species. Dave

Jeff, I feel for you mate, I really do. You gave those cats so much love for their long and happy lives, they could not have asked more of you. I am sure they are still around, that shadow you see out of the corner of your eye sometimes! We always have rescued cats and give them a loving home, the only downside is if they are fairly old, then we don't get to love them for too long. But they are happy and repay the love back to us (yes, occasionally with mice or birds!) I am as bad as you, when we lose one I always cry like a baby, even though I am a 55 year old Metalhead! We decided one time after the last cat died that we would have no more because the heart ache was too bad, but the house seemed so empty without little furballs about that we had to go to the rescue centre and let two more adopt us, for that is how it goes. We visit the place and the cats decide if we are worthy of their patronage! They choose us, every time. Give it a while to come to terms with things a little mate, then go and find two more little souls who need a good, loving home. Works for me! Dave

It is just beetles doing what comes naturally, but I see the points made above when they are doing it in an un-natural environment. If they are made to fight just for our entertainment then I agree that is wrong, but if they are made to fight to observe their behaviour and see how they use their mandibles that is another matter. Having been on the receiving end of the mandibles of our native Stag Beetle I can testify to the fact that they use them well!
As an aside, when I was a kid here in England Lucanus cervus was a common insect. We would collect males and bring them to school in little boxes then make them fight, we would put wagers on each one. We never let the fight go too far though, the first beetle on its back was the loser, then they would be separated. If you had a good fighter you wanted to keep it alive for the next one! I would never condone this now as it is cruel, plus they are scarce and protected here now, but as kids it was entertaining.

Adam, I can send a leg of buddha and elephenor if you want. They are very old though so I don't know how viable the DNA would be.

Hi nzwings, do you have any of the Aenetus for sale or exchange? I collect Hepialidae and have been after this beauty for many years. I was promised some by another New Zealander but they never came. Cheers, Dave

Although the website is all about killing moths it DOES kill beetle larvae too.

This is what a lot of people are using here now: www.zensect.net/home.phpI believe it is available all over Europe, I can't say for the rest of the world. But I do know it works and is harmless to us! I use the 'mothball' type which can be bought in Supermarkets here. Dave
