Those are L. dispar, but they are ssp rutilus, very common on the continent.

Maybe so Charlie, but a one armed guy in a wheelchair with a pen? Come one! Some people are just too trigger happy.

Those are typical symptoms of a virus infection. This could have come from the leaves you were feeding them or even have been on the eggs to start with. Also damp leaves can cause this too, or if there is some bird excrement on them that you have not noticed. There are so many ways this can happen and the sad thing is that it is usually fatal to the whole colony. I have heard of people treating the larvae with antibiotics but I do not know how or which type I am afraid.

I think the death sentence should be brought back but only for the worst crimes like serial killers. My thoughts on Paedophiles would not bear posting on here but suffice to say emasculation with maybe a cheese wire or rusty knife may be involved! Alternatively lock them in a big room with the childs relatives, see how long they last! But I digress. Tougher prison sentences are the answer IMHO. Life should be that - life. The only way you get out is in a wooden box. I would also bring back forced labour, make them work hard on roads or quarries. Prison should be a punishment and deterrent not a holiday camp. When people are deliberately re-offending to get back inside because they have such a cushy life there you know something is wrong.

Pete, they were ambushed so it would have made no difference if they were carrying guns or not. They still would have been killed. If the Police start to routinely carry guns more criminals will do so too, then the problem will escalate and more people will end up being shot. You will wind up with 'wild-west' type shootouts like they do in America where innocent people get caught in the crossfire. Personally I would equip ALL officers with tasers, next best thing to a gun and very effective but non-lethal. I personally think the more important question is why two unarmed female officers were allowed to go to an area that he was suspected of being in and why was he not caught sooner. Now he has made a name for himself as a police killer which I am sure will come in handy when he gets out of prison in a few years time.

Very interesting, but it still does not clarify how the eggs get from a freshwater stream to inside a cricket.

Bill, I have heard from several sources that Messrs Brechlin and Meister do get a bit 'enthusiastic' with discovering and naming new species. I remain neutral in the matter but many other entomologists do not hold them in very high esteem. Several of their 'species' have been found to be synonyms. I also believe that too much emphasis is placed on DNA sequencing at the moment, I believe it is still not 100% reliable as a determination tool and I have seen evidence of this myself in insects and Mollusca. In years to come I am sure it will be improved and refined to become a much more reliable source. Dave
