I believe you are correct about transporting live specimens of a species into another state where they are not native. I think it falls under the jurisdiction of the USDA to prevent potential crop & forest pests from establishing themselves elsewhere. I imagine to do so legally, you would need a permit which probably have to be issued through a scientific or educational institution. I don't know what the penalties would be if a person were to get caught, but I don't think I would want to find out!

Hannes - Yes, it only works if the moths are resting on a hard surface such as a wall or concrete parking lot. Maybe with a lot of practice I can master the art of throwing them like a spear! LOL Most of the time now I just pinch , package in a glassine envelope, & bring them home to freeze. That reminds me, I've got about 10 sandwich size containers to go through, before my wife gets totally ticked off at me!

I used to spear them and other moths at rest with a hypodermic needle with alcohol in it. If you miss, they're gone for good. I started thumping them with the back of my fingernail on the thorax. Too hard & they get slightly smashed & too light, they might fly away. I was pretty good at it when I was younger.

Sorry to hear the bad news. Hope something turns up for you soon. I've been out of work for a year and a half. Practically given up on finding full time work at 59 years old. Even the part-time jobs a few & far between. Going to have to have a college education to work at McDonald's before long!

garin33 - I wonder how he would respond to multiple large orders! I've got a twisted sense of humor, but I like to people squirm a bit when they are ripping people off or acting like jerks. Back in the 80s, I worked for Pepsi. We were doing a reset of the beverage aisle space allocation. Each major company had 2 or 3 employees working on it. One of the Dr Pepper guys was being a total jerk, and I managed to get his pager number. This was before cell phones or even pagers that registered a caller ID were around. Your pager went off & you had to call your office to get a phone number or message. I gave his pager number to about 10 people & each of us would call it about 2 or 3 times each day for a couple of weeks. Doubt if he got much work done running to the nearest phone to call in!

Looks like a millipede to me. I'm not familiar with them, so not sure of an ID any further than that.

I ran across this just yesterday concerning Texas justice:
The Texas quote of the day for August 26th finds Judge Roy Bean admonishing a prisoner before sentencing him:
“Time will pass and seasons will come and go; spring with its wavin’ green grass and heaps of sweet-smellin flowers on every hill and dale. Then will come sultry summer, with her shimmerin’ heat-waves on the baked horizon; and fall with her yellow harvest-moon and the hills growin’ brown and golden under a sinkin’ Sun; and finally winter, with its bitin’, whinin’ wind, and all the land will be mantled with snow. But you won’t be here to, see any of ‘em, Carlos Manuel Robles; not by a damn sight, because it’s the order of this court that you be took to the nearest tree and hanged by the neck. The sheriff will ride off leaving you to dangle by the neck until you are dead, dead, dead!”
---- Trial decision by Judge Roy Bean
They didn't mess around with appeals back then!

Ebay really has no incentive to pull listings since they get a percentage of the sale. I used to report items that I knew were in violation of their policies, but it usually fell on deaf ears as you pointed out. If the buyer of this beetle gets it & decides it was "Not as Described", Ebay will force the seller to refund the purchase price plus original shipping. Ebay will keep the listing & final value fee. My wife & I have been selling on Ebay for 9 1/2 years & it has just gone from bad to worse the last few years. We sell a few of the extra insects I collect & most of the time we make about 25-50 cents per specimen which doesn't even begin to cover gasoline expenses, let alone time spent taking pictures & writing descriptions.

I'm using the same strategy with my 5 year old grandson! So far, it's just been at a blacklight sheet in the backyard. Maybe in a couple of years we can plan some overnight trips, if his interest is still there.

I've injected with isopropyl alcohol, as well. It's almost instantaneous. I have had the same staining with it on occasion when injecting ex pupa of several different species. Not sure if it has anything to do with the bodily fluid used to pump up the wings that perhaps had not all thoroughly returned to the body. Any thoughts?
