It might be a soft scale insect. Here's a short video:

I experienced the same thing growing up in central Illinois back in the 60s. It was always a single kernel of corn. I came to the same conclusion that it was a bird or squirrel that was hiding them there for safe keeping.

Personally, Whataburger is my favorite place to eat after a long day or night of collecting. Here's their menu: whataburger.com/foodThey have jalapeno cheddar biscuits that you can substitute for the regular biscuits.

Saw my first Swallowtail of the season today, a Giant (Papilio cresphontes). It came flying slowly right past me while sitting on my front porch. Also saw several Cloudless Sulfurs (Phoebis sennae) today. High temperature was around 82 F today. Average high is 65 F. Hope we don't get a late hard freeze. Average last frost in Houston is February 15th, but I have seen it freeze as late as March 17th. The next few weeks should be interesting.

I collected a couple of them in South Texas over Labor Day weekend. Not too common near my home near Galveston. I have been seeing Phoebis agarithe here which is usually uncommon.

Way to go Bill! Looks to be in pretty good shape considering the distance it must have traveled. Always interesting to see what southerly winds will end up bringing, especially as fall approaches.

I've seen this before & I still find it hilarious. Anyone ever experience the "It" moment while out collecting? You know, the feeling when you start to walk like a penguin? It happened to me one night & was not a pretty sight! Over 10 miles to the nearest open gas station with a restroom & 45 miles to home. Fortunately I had some plastic bags to cover the seat in my vehicle!

I wonder if it is being sold as a natural soil amendment or fertilizer. I know earth worm castings are quite popular with horticulturalists. After all, it's all manure.
