I found several larvae today. No adults on the wing yet. End of next week. So, would you say these tend to be out by July? I know some of my local Euphydryas editha subspecies should be out soon. Anicia is out in the Sagebrush flats 2 hours north of here.

I am no Trump fan. However, the man knows how to make money, and lots of it. He also has a great taste in women. And I would bet some serious coins, she goes to bed "Naked" every night. I will bet some serious coin He get re-elected, and by a very large margin. Bill Clinton climbs into bed with Hillary every night. Bill must take matters into his own hands. And if the Democraps put forth Biden as the challenger, it will be four more years of "The Donald". Now think about this. What if Melania would run for President in 2024? I do not argue about politics. I am not a Republicon, nor a Dumbocrat. I just a good old Lepidopterist with an incredible sense of humor. And I am having lunch with my lady friend today. Well Leroy, at least you are admitting not to like one side. They are both garbage really, and it is a crying shame. Anyhow, I hope you have been doing well with all the madness in the world, and doing a lot of collecting. By the way, are Baltimore Checkerspots found in Ohio?

John, Actually, it’s only a handful of those goons who put people down as I see it. It happens in my Discus forum and others as well. Today’s world is leaning towards being inconsiderate more often than not. Try a political forum if you want to see this big time. I really think that many of these people are actually insecure and must be rude, mean, or condescending to make their points so as to boost their image.......which is really a pseudo boost of their image imho. Our current leader is the king of such tendencies.......oh oh, now I’ve done it. Surely I’ll be bashed for that last statement, but it’s true nevertheless no matter one's political stance. Hi Bill. I have had some experience with this kind of actions on bug guide before. Funny thing was that it wasn't the admins or the founder. It was enthusiasts. I just ignore it now as I have many other things to worry about.

I found it to be easy as pie, mind you, I am in Northern Nevada, and reared them solely on silver maple, since it is an ornamental in my area. I got them to pupate fairly well on moist paper towels lining the bottom of the pupation container.

Brownsville would be awesome to check out for the neotropical leps. Not sure if you can collect them, unless you know a place. If you decide to get back into lycaenids, let me know as I have done well last year here in northern nevada and california. Hopefully this coming season will be good as well.

I don't think it'sa protected species, but it sure can be local. Gotta go to higher elevation or below peaks to find them, though they can occur lower if habitat is good.

I keep a copy of this statement in my car, in case I'm confronted by anti-collecting people: Uninformed persons sometimes imagine that butterfly collectors pose a threat also, but there is scant evidence for this. During an average week in summer there are probably more butterflies killed by cars on American roads than the total taken by all the collectors in history. For any would-be protectors of butterflies, harassment of net-wielding lepidopterists is a waste of time; habitat protection is a more worthwhile effort. We assume that most users of this guide want to watch butterflies, not collect them. However, these new watchers or “butterfliers” should recall that essentially all of our knowledge of butterfly classification and distribution is based on the work of collectors. Species of butterflies new to science are still being discovered, and they must be scientifically documented before their habitat can be protected, so collecting is an essential part of both science and conservation. We have no evidence that collectors have ever caused the extinction of a butterfly species - but a strident anticollecting attitude might result in some species going extinct without having been discovered. This is solid gold right here!!! Can't say how many times I have been "confronted" here in the Sierra's by a bunch of wannabe hippies and hipsters in their 20's. I usually laugh when they say "butterfly murderer", then show them by UNR badge to shut them down. The perks of doing work for a university does have some advantages to it.

Welcome TigerHawk! Well, this is a good place to pick up pointers, or chat with anyone knowledgeable in the field of entomology, both in the professional, and amateur levels. I have been doing this hobby for around 25 years, and though I am still "young" at 38 years old, there are many with more wisdom on here, and I am also learning new things as I go along. If you have any questions, don't be shy, and ask.

Welcome Jesse! You are also in a prime area for collecting, as Rocky Mountain leps are coveted by many. There are a couple of members who are also in Colorado, so I am sure you can meet up, and collect this coming season. I am based in Reno, NV, so I am also in prime collecting country, and will take advantage this coming spring to collect a lot on my spare time. If you have any questions, don't be shy, and feel free to ask.

Hello Jim Williams, and welcome! I hope that you do well in your collecting pursuits as you live in a prime area for butterflies and moths. I am in Reno, NV, which is not a bad area. I am also going to collect in earnest this coming year, especially in spring in my area.

Found some more this year. Got the plants again, pretty common, and the blues seemed to have started their flight, though a bit later as it's been cold and rainy in California. Here are some of the specimens, along from a malformed one I kept. View AttachmentLooking good! Glad to see you were successful! I saved you a couple as I was only in their area for an hour or so, but am planning to head out before I go on a week vacation to So cal in april.

If you live in Britain or Europe, actias.de would be the place to go. If you are in the U.S., insectnet classifieds and ovogram for eggs and cocoons when in season.
