If you have any luck with S. mendocino, it would be interesting to hear the details as that would be a target for me as well. I go to Sacramento quite often for work, but not sure if I will be there this spring or not. If I am, would love to meet up. I had luck with H. euryalus last April in Southern California (Silverado Canyon in Orange County). Most definitely! How often are you in the Sacramento area?

I remember when I was younger, and naive, I went to a State Park in California, and collected some common butterflies. That was when they started the permit system, but I did not know about it. A ranger came by and asked what I was doing, and I told her what I was doing, and why. She explained to me about the permits, but didn't get upset or anything. She let me keep my bugs as well.

I’ve a pair of Scalare spawning right now, big fights with the other pairs. Thats about right! I have a bunch of female Gambusia sp(Mosquitofish) amd male Endlers guppies. Breed regular guppies, and boy, were they horndogs! They killed off many a female.

Another one. They were begging for food when I took these. Have a couple of American Flagfish killifish, which I have had once, and got them when in Florida.

Getting stung by hemileucine caterpillars, is NOT too fun, though one has to roll with the punches when rearing them. Though not in the Hemileucinae, I had a chance to rear Saturnia mendocino one year, and of course I thought I would be careful enough not to have to wear gloves.... Lol, big mistake. A wasp sting may be more painful, but the caterpillar-induced rashes and welts were more disturbing looking to me. Funny you mention that as that is one of the moths I am after this spring. They occur just west of me in the Sacramento-Grass Valley area in California. That and I am always on the lookout for Hyalophora euryalus.

I am hoping to go for those hopefully next weekend if the weather cooperates. We have been getting storm after storm here in the Sierra Nevadas, so they might be a little behind yet.

I've got a saltwater aquarium but, no coral yet. That's a future project. Nice! I would start with some colorful star corals, mushrooms, paly's, or leather corals just because they are great as beginner corals. Once you do good on those, the torches, zoanthids, and the rest will be the nest step up.

I don’t think most people have time for more than 2-3 serious hobbies, . Is that why I don’t get enough sleep? I gotta run, have to remove snow from the roof, refinish boat brightwork, rig the Iceboats, put away all the Christmas decorations, get a Vickers MG lock on eBay, pick up sheet metal at the PO for another restoration, await some Canadian BREN Mk1 parts, get the WiFi extended installed, finish writing another book, load the relaxing container, prep for a trip to southern FL, and get the fish set up to spawn another generation. And work 12 hours a day. That’s this weeks list. what kind of fish did you breed?

Bill,
What kind of tropical fish do you keep? I have focused on livebearers and tetras.

Good to know, Robert. I have always wondered if these types of scumbags just start an "insect collecting" or shell collecting company just to scam collectors. Bunch of lowlifes these people are.

I always liked Ceratocampinae and Hemileucaenae just because I have reared them many times, and they are fun to rear. Getting stung by hemileucine caterpillars, is NOT too fun, though one has to roll with the punches when rearing them. I do have a soft spot for Hyalophora though.

Got some nice areas to collect here, depending on what you are looking for. Nice to head up to Canada and Alaska to do some collecting sometime. I was a little surprised to see how many Lepidoptera species we have in common (and probably lots more that aren't.) That international border and accompanying restrictions must be a bit of a hassle to deal with though.... Oh yeah! Good ole Fish and Wildlife and their stupid restrictions! One can't have fun with a hobby, and go collect common bugs without being hassled by someone with no clue, or some NABA type.

I would suggest to get in contact with Todd Stout. He is in Utah, and also has a website called www.raisingbutterflies.org. He has some pics on how to raise local Parnassius and swallowtails.

Think he was being sarcastic. lol Myess. I was. No matter what happens, its the Mexicans fault! Jan In my neck of the woods, it's mexicans, illegals(or to some, anyone that LOOKS illegal), and muslims. In some rare cases, it's the colored folks fault and the global cabal of jews and jewish bankers. lol
