Yes, free. Except for postage.
The idea is one I'm taking from Young Entomologists Society from 30 years ago. Worked great.
It's the Swap Box. Here's how it works.
Participants put in 10 specimens each in the box, each identified as to who put it in. If we can get five participants, that's 50 specimens from which to select.
The box is sent from participant to participant. Each participant can take out up to 10 specimens.
You replace what you take with equal quantity. If the box has made the full circle back to you and it contains some of your specimens that nobody wanted you take those out and replace them with something else.
This is a great way to trade specimens with other regions of USA without having to exchange emails, pay mail to send a few specimens, advertise, or deal with whiny buyers.
Of course, it relies on participants to be respectful and moral. It's not a dumping ground for junk, or Pieris rapae. The box also has to be sent on within a week. Participants who abuse the privilege will be dumped.
I'm sitting on loads of saturnids, sphingids, catocala, arctids, nymphalids, papilio, etc from NE USA, and also hard to find species from Solomon Islands, as well as specimens that don't serve any purpose to my studies. It's not worth my time to deal with trying to sell the stuff- but open a box, exchange some specimens, that I can do. At the same time, there are species in the south, midwest, etc that would fit holes in my reference collection- but I don't have time to work out trades- but again, open a box, exchange some specimens, that I can do.
Sadly, due to export regulations this would be open to USA members only.
If you're interested and are in USA post here! When we have four more committed participants I'll act as coordinator and get it rolling.

Chuck,
I'm game to try this for a while. I belonged to the YES swap box decades ago, it worked pretty well. The trick is to get a group of members who have somewhat similar interests so the same bugs don't go round and round without changing... PM or e-mail me if you decide to go ahead.
Cheers, J. Hyatt

Sounds like fun. All we need is each others addresses.

I was a YES member and participated in the Swap Box. Would be fun to take part if you get it going again.

That’s the five we needed. I’ll say we can take up to eight total.
PM me your addresses and email. Well start a private email list and can share a wishlist. I will prep a box and specimens to kick it off.

Well we have eight let’s see how it goes. If you haven’t PMd me your address and email please do so. Include your phone number if you like. Also list (and feel fee to post here) your area of specialization and wish list.
I’m in FL this week so will prep and send next week.
BTW Anybody in the group need magasoma elephas beetle? I don’t want to open this to beetles that should be a different box but i have a couple extras I can put in.
BTW nobody should expect A1 specimens. Not saying there won’t be any but the real value in this swap box is local captured stuff that may not be A.

Chuck,
I presume the box will contain a list with address of the next person it's to go to. Will there be a time limit to keep the box between shipments, say a couple of weeks?
Cheers, jh

Never was a big stickler for A1 material. lol I am happy with a bug with a chip missing or broken antennae. Most I get in the wild, unless found at the peak of it's flight season, is usually a wee bit worn.
