Hi Radovan, I take it you've edited the attached images? They appear immediately for me and have attached fine..? You may think none is A1 but I can't see much wrong with them! Congratulations on having them Simon

Bill,
I read your tip about gin on the old forum and have used it with success ever since! Thank you ;D
I'd recommend it to everyone (especially anyone with large stiff beetles to relax).

If you want to see disturbing movie just look of the italien movie Cannibal holocaust. Some time during the movie you ask your self if is real or not. "Holocaust" is "so-so" imho - sure it's a classic of the Italian Cannibal Movie sub-genre but give me Umberto Lenzi's mighty "Cannibal Ferox" (aka "Make Them Die Slowly") anyday!!! I met Ruggero Deodato, who directed "Cannibal Holocaust" many years ago at a film festival here in the UK and got him to sign various things (DVD, video, film posters, books etc). A genuinely nice guy and you'd never think to look at him that he directed movies like he did Simon

If you press search on the upper menu, you get to choose what sections in the forum u want to search in. Also this forum and the old forum lays on 2 different databases. So no, search here won't search for stuff in the old forum. Thanks Wolf, I didn't think a search would cover both this and the old forum. Where do you mean by "upper menu"? Before the sub-forums? I only see the search function/icon when I go into each individual sub-forum... Simon

Thank you again,

Hi Clark,
I've noticed that the search function only seems to apply to each individual sub-forum (rather than searching the whole of the 2011 Forum...unless I've missed something). Can the search function be expanded to cover the whole of the 2011 Forum?
Also, carrying out a search on the new forum doesn't pick up any posts on the old forum - is that correct?

Simon: I got this pair expupa from Bernard Turlin, he sent me the empty chrysalis from the male specimen. John Nice ;D It gives the pair a nice history and "provenance". Simon

I've not collected in mainland Spain but have done some collecting in the Canary Islands (an autonomous region of Spain so maybe similar laws/rules/views on collecting?).
I, like Dunc, never experienced any problems. While collecting near my in-laws house in VERY rural Feurteventura a Police car pulled up next to me and in very broken English one of the two (armed) Policemen asked what I was doing - when I said "collecting butterflies" he turned to his friend and said "mad English" and they both got back in the car and drove off laughing!!!
I've collected on Gran Canaria, La Gomera and Tenerife as well as Feurteventura and have always found the locals to be more worried about more important things (like drunken yobs ruining their beautiful towns/beaches) than a bit of harmless collecting!

Thought I'd try my luck with this one after getting a successful ID to the P. delphius I posted (thanks again lepido ;D). The only data I have on this is Qinghai, Xunhui County, China. The label also refers to "Mengda" but I don't know if this is a place or the name of the collector?!?!? Unfortunately I have no information on the altitude that this was taken at... Anyway, thanks in advance for ANY assistance Simon

John,
Is that the empty chrysalis pinned under the male? (can't make it out fully)... Did you get this as a pupae?

Hey everyone! Interesting observations/thoughts... I realised soon after posting my original message that I'd called the post "problems RELAXING Charaxes" when what I actually meant to post was "problems SETTING Charaxes" (as most of the posts on the old forum seemed to suggest that the problem arose AFTER relaxing). Sure, stout-bodied butterflies take longer to relax but I'm with Claude on this; I've NEVER needed to leave anything longer than 48 hours. Bob - how did anything survive 10 days in the relaxing box? I always add some napthalene (previously used thymol) to the relaxing box to try and suppress mould but always seem to find it creeping in after about 72 hours... I'm with you on the setting needle/forcep "debate". I've tried forceps but never managed to get a result I'm happy with - I guess it's what you get used to and practice, practice, practice... I've always found the anatomical aspects of the Charaxes that make them more difficult to relax (stout bodies, strong wing muscles, strong costal veins) are the very things that make the actual setting easy (or easier) - I've had WAY more problems with things other than these...
