Hi all,
I've got an Atrophaneura priapus from Mount Wayang in Western Java.
Would this be of the nominate race?
I'll post a 'photo when the current uploading "issue" is resolved.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Simon

What are we looking at here? Is that a piece of jewelry? Hey Clark, No, it's not jewellery! Back in the day (God I feel old typing that but we are talking 15-20 years ago!) I was a MASSIVE fan of horror movies (not the Hollywood type teens-in-peril rubbish but "classics" such as the Hammer Horrors, Italian murder msyteries from the 50s/60s/70s, Japanese gore and worldwide underground oddities etc etc). I used to travel around attending film retrospectives/fan events etc and amassed a collection of about 3500 VHS cassettes and 2500 DVDs (I collected quite seriously up until a couple of years ago) plus several hundred reference works on worlwide film wierdness. Anyway, for a period of time one of my favourite films was a film called "Der Todesking" ("The Death-King); hence my forum name. The film, by the German director Jorg Buttgereit, is a collection of seven episodes about suicide (!!!). Running throughout the film is a child drawing a picture of the "Death King" and that picture is my avatar. The film makes grim viewing but contains absolutely no gore whatsoever; it the build up to the suicides (all committed off screen from memory - it's years since I've seen it) and the general atmosphere of the film that makes it what it is. Probably his most (in)famous movie is "Nekromantik" about a female necromantik who attempts to "cure" herself by starting a relationship with a living man rather than a corpse When that doesn't work she beheads him in rather graphic detail. Apparently the print of the film was escorted out of the UK by police when it was submitted for classification (which was denied). Perhaps suprisingly, Buttgereit has gone on to work directing a number of "hit" US shows including the series "Lexx". So no...not jewellery!!! Simon

The Backroom and Porchlight caused me a lot of grief in the past. Things are tough enough already. I don't need any grief right now. Maybe later when things smooth out. For now, let's stay on topic. Okay - point taken! Both rooms DID cause a lot of arguments/grief between members in the past so probably a good call... Simon

Hey All, Can anyone help me??? I have a jpeg image stored on the hard-drive of my PC which I want to use as my Avatar. I don't understand what the reference to "http/url" on the modify profile page refers to??? I'm a real Luddite when it comes to computers so in VERY SIMPLE TERMS - what do I need to do to get my desired image as my Avatar? (do I need to upload to a photo hosting site such as Imageshack???) Thanks in advance, Simon (confused by computers!)

Hey John, You beat me to it!!! Wasn't it here the other day (i.e. on the new forum) I was gonna post my conspiracy about the flu vaccine - perhaps the authorities got wind of this and forced Clark to take it down before I posted ;D !!! Simon

What do you like about this new forum? My favourite bit has to be...smileys!!! ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, it looks "clean" and appears user friendly. I'm a real Luddite when it comes to technology so haven't got round to trying to upload photos yet but it's good that you can click and expand. It's also good for all of us that it's a platform that's easier for you to maintain - we all know (and appreciate) what a labour of love keeping insectnet alive has been for you so anything that "lightens the load" somewhat has to be good. I personally LOVED the old forum and will still be visiting regularly to read (and re-read and re-read and...) old posts and I loved the look and feel of the old forum. BUT, when I got your old email that the forum had died around Christmas it was VERY bad news. So...I guess before I know it this version will feel like the norm again. Long live insectnet!!!

Hey Claude, They DO look nice...but are the prices in the first post correct (4€ CENT per label for less than 500) Is this 4€ per label? So would 10 labels cost 40€ Or am I reading this wrong? Simon

They are from a small part of South Africa, very hard to get to. I think most of their habitus is National Park now so no collecting, come to think of it not much of RSA is NOT National Park! And yes, they are rare though not worth the price asked for on ebay! Dave Thanks for the update Dave! It makes sense that coming from an area where collecting is (presumably) now either prohibited or at the very least restricted would drive the price up...but really? The price the eBay seller wanted! I wonder if anyone had deep enough pockets to bid on the specimen? I know I haven't...

Hey Wolf, It sounds amazing I am very jealous of you! My dream would be to go collecting somewhere totally unlike my home environment - West Africa, Australia, one of the Japanese Islands...or Vietnam! How did you find a Vietnamese entomologist to assist? (or was this someone you know in your home country?). With regard to getting strange looks from the locals - I find this happens to me when I am collecting at home ;D I guess non-collectors are the same the world over!!!

Very nice!
I'd love to hear how collecting in Vietnam was...how long were you there for, was it difficult (or even necessary) to arrange permits, did you travel to remote areas to collect? etc etc...
Congratulations on having collected some beautiful bugs in their natural habitat ;D
