If I remember right, there was a thread on the old forum about this. I think someone suggested using vegetable oil mixed in with the poop to give it the consistency of peanut butter. Yes Mike, it has been a long winter! Lucanidae, can't get rid of the wife, she's the only one with a job at present!

I read the wiki as well and would have no desire to see the videos or any part of them. I feel bad when I accidentally hit a bird or small animal while driving & I always try to kill any insects I collect as quickly & humanely as possible, either by freezing or injection. I know these boys are the exception rather than the rule when it comes to today's youth, but it still makes you wonder why or how did these boys get to that point, absolutely no regard for life at all!

I've got a bumper sticker on the back window of my van that says "Official Parking Lot Inspector" with a picture of a couple of beetles on it. A little humor goes a long way while explaining to a law enforcement person what you are doing.

When I first started collecting again a few years ago, I bought an inexpensive net for around $30.00. It only had a 12" diameter bag, which I thought at the time would be plenty large enough. One night I came across my first Black Witch moth (Ascalapha odorata) resting on the pavement at a gas station. I swung from side to side instead of placing the net over it from the top. I missed & had to watch it fly off into the night sky. I've since captured five more plus a Thysania zenobia thanks to changing my technique & buying a 21" diameter net with a 5 foot handle!

Been an unusually warm winter here on the Gulf coast of Texas as well. We only had about 5 or 6 nights right at freezing. At least we are getting some much needed rain to counter last year's drought. It's been in the 80s a few times already here & overnight lows are up and down from 40-70 degrees F! Went out two nights ago & found three A. polyphemus. Found two species of sphinx moths so far in three outings, along with a few beetles. I guess only time will tell. At least we've escaped the terrible tornado outbreak that the midwest & midsouth had this week. Several small towns completely wiped off the map. My heart goes out to those living in these areas & hope you are all safe.

My wife gets upset at my moths in the freezer. I imagine she would divorce me if I even mentioned freezing poop! LOL

Thanks for explaining how it works. Did you buy it or make it yourself? Thanks.

That is one long net handle! Can you explain how the net works which opens and closes? Thanks.

Looks like the results completely justified the wait.

Hi, Bill. I really like the idea of these zig-zag racks. Going to try it soon. Thanks for posting.

Sometimes I wonder if there is going to be any untouched & unspoiled areas of the earth for our grandchildren to explore. Wonder what life will be like with a generation growing up with smartphones. Maybe tiny heads with small brains & nearsighted eyes from reading such small screens. Can't forget bulging muscular thumbs from texting! LOL
