For my 18th birthday (28/10/2011), I decided to do somethin' different this time around. No parents, no restaurants, no birthday cakes... Just me, my good friend, and my collecting gear. We planned for a four days and three nights long trip to Fraser's hill for some moth collecting. Fraser's Hill has been long known as a top notch tourist getaway because of its anti-commercialism and peaceful rain forest tranquility. But, its also quite famous among insect collectors due to its vast diversity of species. When the weather is cold and misty, even the dim street lights are enveloped with moths and beetles of all sorts. Thankfully, when we decided to go, the weather was perfect and we were adorned with thousands of moths on our sheets every night! We stayed at the Silverpark Resort with a specially-requested forest-view balcony (unit B 2-1-2). We sat up one light trap on the balcony and let it shine all night long while we collected at the Telecom Resort Bungalow where they actually catered for us insect collectors. The back of the bungalow faced the vast hillsides and our lights were therefore visible from miles away, attracting thousands of nocturnal passers-by. The following photos are highlights of what we got. Enjoy... As for this photo, all the moths here were actually collected even before our first night. Just by walking around the resort and inspecting the lights, we found all these... Hints of great nights to come! Attachments:

Unfortunately, our third night (final night) was dealt with much frustration as the winds had picked up and hardly anything was coming. We waited patiently till the winds finally slowed around 2:30am and we started getting some very welcomed species... Attachments:

Oh to be 18 again! Wow, what a haul! This reminds me of collecting dreams I've had and when I wake up and realize it wasn't real. Congratulations on a dream come true!

Holy crap! I can't even imagine catching that many moths. Such a trip would be amazingly exciting. Stuff like this makes me depressed as winter hasn't even started here yet Will be a few months before the leps are out again

Ah wow. I like it how on the final night you claim "hardly anything was coming" and I see a picture of a box filled with saturniidae. That's a load of moths. It's interesting how each night brings some different species, or in different amounts. Anyway, have fun spreading all of those It may take you a little while.

Honestly, we didn't think we'd be getting anything at all! But, then Mother Nature changed her mind... I still have other stuff to spread before I even get to these. They're just drying out in my drawers for now...
