Manfred:
Thanks for info about ulysses karkarensis, I have a present day M+F from Karkar named "karkarensis". Also have a beautifull female from old collection with label p. ulysses melanotica/Dampier Is. (I have too confess I was not able to find Dampier Is., nowI know why! Another mystery solved... I have even some specimens labelled "Neu Pommern" New Pomerania, back when these Islands were part of the German Empire.

I think with the apollos, huge series were collected of these long extinct ssp., some exceptions maybe ssp. comminus (Bukkegibirge) Hungary, ssp. hoglandicus (Aland is.) in both cases were described in 1930s, both habitats were after WW2 under Soviet occupation, during this period both became extinct. Communist regimes were never great in conservation, or entomology. Of the extinct papilionidae, most certainly battus polydamas antiquus(Antigua) and papilio p. polyxenes(Cuba) have too be very rare in coll., I doubt even if one preserved battus antiquus exists? Papilio ulysses karkarensis(Karkar Is.) o. priamus boisduvalii(Woodlark Is., the ones Laurie mentioned, is the fact that these are rare, due too that these places are rarely collected? On the otherhand, French Guiana is heavily collected, yet no one can get any menatius menatius, c. maroni, coelus, klagesi ssp., even panthonus barbotini, anchises ssp. phosphorus ssp. from there! Same for papilio epiphorbas ssp. from Anjouan, Mayotte, Grande Comoro. I would bet that if a very good collector like M.Turlin had lived on lets say New Hannover Island for 10 years, imagine the treasure trove of new material, chilasa moerneri, ulysses, phestus, codrus, euchenor, fuscus, etc. nssp., known ssp. from there. Of the 14 species I am missing, eight are African graphium: simoni aurivilliusi abri junodi pelopidas 2 ssp. olbrechsti 2 ssp. poggianus 2 ssp. levassori I know Bernard Turlin lived on Comoros for many years and only caught a few(knowing the right place, time) that speaks volumes. But then I wonder how many battus polydamas antiquus from Antigua, papilio polyxenes polyxenes from Cuba are still in collections. They have been extinct for many years. Parides a. castilhoi, klagesi (2 ssp.) c. maroni, c. dospassosi, battus belus aureochloris are rarely ever seen. Papilio alexiares alexiares, battus chalceus chalceus, e. obertheuri super rare Mexican papilionidae. In ornithoptera there is the ext. rarity chimaera flavidior. Only 4 specimens of o. paradisea are known from Suipiori Is. and so it goes. I onced picked up 2 graphium nigrescens(Gabon) never seen any since... John
