Leroy, do you think cold weather nothing might be decent in the inter mountain west? I have made some bait and have some ropes and wine bait.

I just made some different kinds of "slop" for fall and winter moths. Being that I have been away from collecting in the wast for a long time, I made a couple of different types of bait. I have some rum/brown sugar/molasses/rum/banana bait, some red wine/peach/sugar bait, and some banana/peach/brown sugar/molasses/rum bait. I wonder which ones would produce what. We shall see. Also gonna try some rope baits as well.

I have seen some moths flying in the middle of winter, but not many. Maybe the west is different than where you are at, but what would be good times to set a light, what is the best temperature, and would rope soaked in bait work?

Got a Cat last weekend while collecting food plant for some monarch caterpillars and some Samia ricini larvae I'm rearing right now. He was collected at Oxbow Lake park near downtown Reno,NV on Fremont cottonwood. Not sure if this is Catocala irene.

I agree with Leptraps on this. Caepernick should put some of his money into his community and help kids stay away from gangs, which are a reason why that particular community is all messed up. Other than the whole race thing, we do have a great country where you can do such a thing without getting tossed in jail, or shot.

Sure Tom. I tried calling you this afternoon, but you were probably busy. Will try on Saturday. Will try and be in the field about mid day looking for Hemileuca burnsi.

A few days ago I put out two bait traps loaded with fermented bananas and peaches. I mix in some sugar, brown or white, and run the concoction through a blender. This year is one of the best Iv'e seen for Asterocampa, and Limenitis. So far I have encountered Asterocampa celtis, and clyton both male and female. Angle wings of two species, Polygonia interrogationis, and P. comma, along with a few other species of Satyridae are also fairly regular visitors. Interestingly I have collected two forms of Asterocampa clyton, both typical and the dark form "geneumbrosa". In the photo below I have two pair of this species that illustrate the different forms. View AttachmentView AttachmentView Attachment Nice haul, Tom. Seeing that Pearly-eye and the other satyrids makes me want to go look for them. Problem is, season is about over here. If you run into any more satyrs, could you save me a few?

It's just science. It doesn't matter if you are collecting insects or rocks. To me it's a added bonus if you can appreciate the beauty in the specimens that you collect and not just view them as objects. Anytime my coworkers or anyone else even starts to try to give me any crap over my insect collection I remind them that I also keep their nightmares as pets (snakes) and that usually shuts them up. Ha!!! I do one better. I have a tarantula at home and that is enough to shut anyone up about making fun of my hobbies. Spiders are awesome. lol

Tom, that is the main reason why there are bullies in the world. You gotta have a jackass who is so insecure about his "manliness" that he has to pick and make fun of others to feel better. In reality, he is the real sissy. lol

I have to deal with that a lot. I find it funny when a grown man tries to assume another grown man's masculinity because of a hobby. Growing up in L.A., this was particularly bad in the Hispanic community. I always had guy's asking me if I was gay or something when I was on a bus with a Schmidt box with Morphos or swallowtails. Then the clueless look if I had beetles and grasshoppers. I always asked when they question my masculinity what they envisioned me doing in order for them to think the way they did. Many thought butterfly collectors were sissy's gaily prancing around a field catching butterflies. When I told them how difficult it is to collect certain butterflies, like some of the Indra swallowtails or satyrs, how many times I have gone through poison oak or ivy, many mosquitos, biting gnats, ticks, leeches, and all manner of bloodsucking bugs, and not to mention the many times I've run into snakes, and broken something, then they'd think twice about calling a bug collector a sissy.

Yellow jackets and wasps in general have been bad in the Sierras this summer. Here in Reno, they are just everywhere. Now, would a bait trap be effective in a desert type of environment, or would rope baits and sugaring be better?

Well, that would sound nice, but Rump just flip flopped on his original message, which was to kick all them Mexicans out. Lol If he would of done what he is doing now, as we get closer to the end, 1. He would of been ahead in the polls, and 2. He would have the Latino, and maybe the black vote. It didn't help that he pandered for black folks to vote for him while in a primarily white town. At this rate, might as well keep the white supremacist, conspiracy theorists, and the nut bars on his corner. This whole election year is one giant circus act. 😔
