For the past 2 weeks my catocala collecting has been absolutely pathetic. I was starting to get a few in the trap and on the sheet mostly epione. The weather is not cooperating. Cold fronts and storms seriously cutting into my collecting time.

Got two Catocala connubialis this past weekend in eastern PA. We'll see how the season goes but that's number one!

I've only added one new species since my last post (neogama) and the past two nights have really sucked, only 1 catocala (muliercula) in my three traps. Looking at my records from last year, i'm still a few days away until most of the big ones emerge but i did miss lacrymosa which i caught one last year on the 4th in my backyard. Going to try some tree tapping tomorrow in a woods close by where they could be, would really like one especially in form zelica.

I haven't bothered trying to tree tap for any since I'm not seeing them on my trees yet. Due to monsoon like weather conditions I still haven't changed from the cantaloupe bait. I'm going to mix up some apple based bait and give that a shot this week. Just out of idle curiosity wonder what or who would come to waffle bait?

Waffle bait? never heard of that but sounds like something Leptraps would use.
I use rotting bananas & plantains in my slotted pan trap and currently have bananas/brown sugar in one of my flat bottoms & blueberries/strawberries/bananas brown sugar in the other. Also i hate tree tapping, but i feel like it's the only way i'm going to get some species as i heard some don't like to come to bait, not sure if true or not.

Some don't come to bait. Some don't come to light. Some don't come to either. I still haven't figured it out. The only way to get them is to tree tap. Then you have ones like C. epione that will come to both.

I moved to a new house about a month ago, so I am a little behind schedule hanging my bait trap. But what is nice is that I can hang it in my back yard now. Our yard is surrounded by woods. In the trap this morning was Amphion floridensis, Darapsa myron, and 1 C. coccinata.

Being able to collect in your yard is very convenient.

Turns out what I thought was coccinata is an ultronia. I caught a coccinata about this time last year. Wishful thinking on my part.

Some species are bait only, like C. cara.
I only see C. parta tapping trees and not on bait or at light.
The little species are most common at light but can be occasional at bait depending on species, and connubialis and sordida is a common tapping species

Hello All:
I am currently in Rock Springs, WY. Heading to Killpecker Dunes today. Thursday I Will collect on the Bear Tooth Plateau. Having a great trip. Lot's of new specimens for my collection.
Never made bait from Waffles. Not the right stuff. However, it will increase the volume of your natural gas!!! LOL.....
No Waffle House's in Wyoming. However, found something close: Flap Jack's Place. Talk about great greasy food!
Gotta go,I can smell the moths from here.
