Leptraps, I'm going to make it a point to one day soon take in the fine cuisine offered up at a Waffle House ! Your anecdotal tidbits and whimsical flair of the cuisine description make it a must see place -- almost akin to Mount Rushmore....

First catocala of the year in the trap this morning. Possibly C. clintonii.

Attempted to check my traps in Perry County, IN. I collected my first black hindwing Catocala. C. epione. I got three males out of the first bait trap I checked.I got four traps checked, and then came the rain!! And rain it did. It rained harder than a double kunted cow pissin on a flat rock!
I gave up after the second down pour and turned for home.
I did find a nice Sessid moth in one of my pheromone traps. Synanthedon decipien. I very small moth. This should prove to be a challenge to mount.

My bait mixture isn't producing the results I expected. Apparently cantaloupe isn't in demand this time of year. I'm going to use it until the weekend and then make some apple & peach. I'll see if that works better.

When I got home from work last night I had two fresh epione on the light sheet and nothing in the trap. These finicky catocala don't like the cantaloupe bait

Should have been. I put brown sugar in it and let it bake for 3 days in the sun. I don't think they like my cooking

What part of the USA do you collect. C. Herodia? I have only found it in the mountains of western Virginia. I have been given locations with a "guaranteed to get it" promise and have never seen it. I have bait traps in a area of Meadi County, KY where it was taken in the early 1980's. I have managed several dozen ellecta and a single C. fredericki. I have 28 bait traps set out. Some in Pine Barrens, remnant prairie, lots of several sphingidea, Acronicta and a good number of Nymphalids, Satyridea and Noctuids. Although I do not colllect beetles, I have found lots of Long Horns. Herodias is easy to get in the Long Island barrens, along with jair. It is also in Massachusetts pine barrens but with the Gypsy Moth explosion this year it may be rare.

Catocala activity has come to a halt in my area. It stopped a couple days ahead of a strong cold front that dropped temperatures from high 80's down to 67 for the daytime high.

Here in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, Catocalas have fallen to a vanishingly small level. We had almost no rain in June, the countryside looks like Afghanistan! We're about 4" behind in annual rainfall, all the deficit coming since Catocala season started at the end of May. Butterfly levels seem weak also.

You can have some of our rain! Here in south-east England we've had the wettest June in history. On two separate days we had more than the normal total June rainfall in an hour, causing floods of biblical proportions. They're having to play today on the middle Sunday of Wimbledon for only the 4th time in history to catch up with all the time lost to rain last week.

After a slow past two weeks, with only 1 new species (which i don't think can be ided) i finally added 3 new species this morning. C gracilis, muliercula and my first ever, minuta. Really surprising catch since i don't know of there being any honey locust here and i caught it in my backyard trap.
