Hi all,
I recently had the pleasure of finding a deceased Colosoma sayi. I pinned him and put him in my collection, but boy does he smell! I know these types of beetles have defensive chemicals they produce when stressed, and I'm 95% certain that's what the smell is from. (There's no mold or other obvious signs of decay) Does anyone have any tips for getting rid of this atrocious smell? I'm wondering if some sort of solvent would work/help?

I had to look that one up. At any rate, I would guess that any odor from the insect would dissipate over time. I wouldn't try chemically removing the odor, and your display case should be sealed, I suppose you could put him in a bag with some other better smelling substance and he'd absorb that scent. My cases smell like moth balls..

Could you just throw beetles in alcohol and then remove and pin? I've had Calosoma stench go away after drying.
