I don't like the current attachment situation either. In past years it was quick & easy to add photos to your posts. Now I don't even bother. I understand that it's cheaper for the site owners to use the present arrangement, but I miss the old days.

Thank you all for your input on this important topic. For you to understand better, the hosting costs is increasing year after year (as there are more and more attachments) so it has to be carefully managed. So it is not "cheaper for the site owners". It is more expensive. Following Chuck ideas of a "premium membership", I have decided to invest this additional 1200€ myself to buy more attachment space to Proboards (6000 Mo more). Let's be careful though : these additional 6000 Mo are the MAXIMUM that Proboards provides, once reached we will be stuck. I will thus open direct attachment to Staff and "Forum benefactors". Doing so, let's hope we will have much more benefactors and that a large part of the additional 1200€/year will be covered. This will happen on the ICF forum too. If you want to become a forum benefactor go there : www.insectnet.com/donate.htm and send me a PM as your paypal name is often different from your username. Another decision : politics and religion will be forbidden on this forum as on the ICF. I have received some request to ban all non-entomological topics. I prefer to ban only politics and religion as on the ICF forum. It has been successful there, so it should work on InsectNet too.

6000 Mo more in hostings It should cover several years of hostings especially if direct hosting is not available to new members asking to ID a crashed cockroach in their bathroom. :-)

Apologies for my ignorance, but what does "Mo" stand for in 6000 Mo?
Adam.

It stands for mega octet. An octet is 8 bits. So it's basically synonymous to mega byte. It has some use in English, but is mostly used in French where it replaces the usage of bits and byte. These words have a homophone in French that you don't use in daily conversations

I’m not in to softwares, computers and data knowledge but comparing to my iPhone storage use and converting Mo to GB it should be enough to attached 8,000-10,000 photos, am I correct ?

Depends on the file sizes, but your estimate is a good guess. Unless people upload HD pics from iPhones @16mb a picture.

Olivier, when you mentioned above "forum benefactors and staff should now be able to post attachments"; are the "staff" the moderators? I presume they are...How about (seasoned) forum members? That is, members who have been on here for a period of time. Not necessarily based on "post numbers".
As you know, some of us have lesser "postings" of less than 1000 or (like me) less than 500. However, my posts have nearly always remained as "insect related" talk. I have tried not to go off on tangents unrelated to an Insect forum. Nor, have I added "spin" to tangents of politics, religion, or say absurd talks of Bigfoot. And while the "porch light" section has seemed popular as of late all these "pages" of completely unrelated (Insect) ramblings only add postings to a relative few who embrace discussions off the grid of insects...
I'm not saying that section should go away. I just wish the topic content could be "halted" at one page maximum. After that, topics are just being "flogged" like a dead horse. Sorry, about this tangent of my own regarding postings !
Anyway, if only the staff or (moderators) as I read it are allowed to post pictures than honestly I doubt we will see many of those. Our moderators are good as "sentinels of the forum". They have your back... However, I have found they post little in the way of photographs to embellish any topics they discuss. Let me be clear though in saying that Nomad is the exception to this in that he has ALWAYS generated relevant photos in all his articles !! I've noticed also, that most or perhaps virtually all of the forum benefactors too have little or no (Insect) related photos to offer up either.
I have wanted to post Insect related pictures here for months now and they would not overlap with my postings on Collectorsecret. However, when I have tried valiantly to use Imgur here as I have used it (there) on our sister forum the photos will not show. I go thru the same process and all I get is a funny coded script (without picture).
So, anyway let me know why I'm having trouble with Imgur here as I would use it rather than cost you in any manner... Otherwise, let me know if seasoned members like myself can now post pic's. Thank you

"Benefactors" AKA subscribers are those who voluntarily provide financial support to the forum. The most common value is $25/yr, with $100/yr and $500/yr noted with a higher status, though typically not with additional perks above $25/yr benefactors.
Benefactor status usually gets additional perks such as: * Ability to quick-load (i.e., host locally) photos * Recognition under name * "members only" sub-forum(s)/ swap area (which notably, on some forums gets a lot of activity as benefactors tend to trade amongst themselves); this may also include "trade reports/ fraud reports" so thus would be available only to benefactors, benefactor-only discounts with vendors, etc.
Those are just a few that other forums use.
