I think we can all agree the data is falsified. The specimen is real, and we know from where it comes.
eBay is just and ad. somebody will contact him and buy it off site.
I wonder how much CITES has invested in breeding the species. My guess is zero.

Of course CITES haven't invested anything. They have no interest in saving species, just stopping people collecting them.

As am ardent Lepidopterists and I fully support the listing and legal protection of all threaten and endangered species.
I have not nor will I ever collect, exchange or purchase a species that is either threatened or endangered. That includes papered, mounted or alive material. Those who do purchased or exchange for threatened or endangered species encourages others to collect endangered or threatened species to increase the profits.
I have used this forum more than once to express my opinions and concerns on endangered and or threatened species. I will continue to do so.
As I had said before, we live in a "Must Have" society. Do not be one of those who "must have" threaten or endangered species.

I save pictures from Ebay of things I'm interested in, some of them are already in the public domain, some sellers put a watermark on their photos, some of which is inexplicable, others I can understand. I have photos I've saved and printed out, I don't see an issue with it. If I want a picture of Raquel Welch in a cavewoman suit, I know where to find it. It is a nice looking butterfly... By saying "Raquel Welch" you are possibly going to get some question marks . That's going back a long waysđ

it is a ways back, but there are a lot of older persons using this site. I was fortunate enough to have seen a recent interview with Miss Welch, see is still drop dead gorgeous. But we're off topic. Don't collect or buy endangered animals of any species.

Hello all, I have to give my 5 pennies to that. First, the guy offers ONLY protected ones with cites or not. Other dealers have specimens with cites or from old collection and many other common butterflies. So a drug dealer only sells heroine but no aspirin . regarding buying, of course one should be careful but as it is often said, cites doesn´s protect wildlife or the species at all. DĂbrera write in his book, that dealers pay a 35 mm Camera for a p. chikae, worth at time, my first one was so 800 EUR. When I was a bit younger, I collected butterflies around our home and in the harz mountains. Papilio machaon we had in our garden quite often, I collected all larvae and I still have some from that time. Here in GĂśttingen, I saw the machaon 10 years ago the last time. Nothing. Also my son bred many Vanessa urticae from larvae he collected and more than a hundred he released. Now, 10 years later ( isn´t there a rock band called 10 years later ? or after...mmmhh.. ok) I see one here and then. What I want to say, it might be no problem if you have many butterflies around you and if you keep the older females in nature. So if you really collect one it doesn´t depend on wether the species is on any list but whether the circumstances are analysed in your brain. Here in Germany we have at the river Mosel a very very beautiful Parnassius apollo. People can go there making photos with a guided tour and there is even a good red wine named after it which you can taste there. So the "must have" can be in a different way ( I ust have better photo.. )
What I bought is O.rothschildi, I had one which was in a box in my parents home a litte pale meanwhile. I remember I was offerd one at 5000 $ ( is equal to 10000 today) but I couln´t afford. Later, I was offerd a hundred pairs each pair 80 or 90 $. Today I pay 30 to 40 EUR for a pair, they are bred and with cites. So the Ornithoptera are in cites, what about all the moths and micros? Nobody cares. keep healthy ! Joachim

Leroy mentioned he collected E, atala before it was endangered; so did I in the Keys. Its food plant is the coontie palm. not real palm but a cycad. cycads have now become a very popular in landscaping. I wonder if this has contributed to increased numbers in South Florida ? Anybody noticed ?

While living in South Florida, I learned one thing very quickly. I planted a particular plant for a particular species, I usually found ova and then the larvae on the plant.
While collecting in Fakahatche Strand, I found the larvae of Calpodes ethlius on Canna. I dug up a couple of plants, put them in Five (5) gallon pails and set them in my back yard. I have an extremely gorgeous series in my collection. Never actually saw an adult of Calpodes ethlius in my yard.
I also built a very nice Pergola for Aristolochia vines. I think I had four species of Aristolochia. Once the vine matured, I could always find the larvae of Battus polydamus.
I also planted several citrus trees for Papilio cresphontes and Sennae trees in my yard. There were always larvae of Phoebis sennae, and Phorbis philia.
Sometime next week I will make a raised flower bed in my back yard for Milk Weeds, Dog Bane, Alfalfa and Red Clover. By mid summer of 2021, I should have an excellent butterfly garden.

I've got a female that was given to me by a missionary friend and collector back in 1980. Don't know the exact date he collected it but its status makes it, of course, a great addition.
