Despite the obvious irony in my question - I'm just wondering why so many participants here have this reflexive tenancy to put others down in this forum? Is this something about insect collectors specifically? I don't see anything remotely similar in other list-serves or forums.
Can't we be nice to other people? As George said, give peace a chance....

John,
Actually, it’s only a handful of those goons who put people down as I see it. It happens in my Discus forum and others as well. Today’s world is leaning towards being inconsiderate more often than not. Try a political forum if you want to see this big time. I really think that many of these people are actually insecure and must be rude, mean, or condescending to make their points so as to boost their image.......which is really a pseudo boost of their image imho. Our current leader is the king of such tendencies.......oh oh, now I’ve done it. Surely I’ll be bashed for that last statement, but it’s true nevertheless no matter one's political stance.

My suggestion just do not comment on a thread if you are going to say something that might hurt someone's feelings. Jesus taught us to love one another, even an enemy. Treat others like how you want to be treated. Hopefully it is in a nice way. Even if someone believes in something crazy they should be treated respectfully in regards to what you say. Think before you type.

I have been around a few more years than most of you. Many moon's ago there was group discussion called Leps-L. It went from a information discussion to hate filled rants.
However, there was a question thrown out that could probably never be answered with any accuracy.
The question was: Who invented the Wiener roast.
The answer: The first man to dance naked in the sun.
Now I thought that was rather humorous. It was then that I realized that most people do not have a sense of humor. Or at least a sick sense of humor like me.

I've been reading more Forum articles and there are interesting topics. I haven't really noticed any offensive comments, although it's certainly within the realm of possibility. I think ideology and politics cause some passionate responses. The main reason I am writing is the "wiener roast" question, it is funny, although I suppose it would depend on how frantically the man was dancing, and how long he was outdoors. Collectors are competitive, I see it on Ebay, I collect old things trying to recapture my childhood, and there are some ruthless adult aged persons who stop at nothing to "one up".

There was a certain Lepidopterist on Insectnet who could be vicious, especially to new or less knowledgeable Lepidoperists. He could be a real rectal orifice.
I will not mention his name.
He was extremely knowledgeable and put forth a great effort to collect and study Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and other orders of insects from the area where he resided.
As a senior citizens, I have been around for 75 years. I have always attempted to help others who were new or those who just need help or information.
And I will admit, I have learned a great deal from others on Insectnet. There are those who know and the who do not.
There are those on Insectnet who send me photographs of specimens to indentify. They also know that I know where to go to get specimens identified.
In short, I do my very best to be a gentleman. And a good looking gentlemen at that!
I think one of the best threads ever on Insectnet was Big Foot and Bluemoth. I must go back and see if I can find it.

Yessirie Buffalo Bob, the Blue Moth-Big Foot topic is still there.
Go to the "Search Box" at the top of the opening page and type in Blue Moth Big Foot, read the entire thread.
I would suggest you have an ample supply of Toilet Paper and stay close to the Porcelain Throne. It is some funny S--t.......

I'll have a look , I seem to have some time off... I try to answer questions from beginners, everyone was a beginner at some point. Sometimes I wonder about the basic nature of questions at times, but, like I said, we were all beginners, and there is only one way to get experience. Books and the experiences of other people can only take you to a certain point, then you have to find out on your own.

John We face these issues on InsectNet but not on the Insect Collectors' Forum. This is because "politics" and "religion" are allowed on InsectNet forum and not on the ICF. + InsectNet has many American members and the USA are very divided politically with a high level of hatred between the 2 political sides. Should we change these rules and ban "politics" and "religion" here too ? I am not sure, it is part of InsectNet DNA... But please guys, if you don't agree with someone, remain factual, no insults, stop putting others down. And at least try to understand the other side, you will learn something. No side is perfect.

Ok, I'm wrong to suggest that politics and other hot button subjects are banned. I'll take this opportunity to point out the vast differences in different parts of the world, and while other methods or approaches may work in country X, there's no way it's going to work in country Z. Opinions are interesting, and if there was a universal fix for our ills, even if the public generally supported those ideas, self-serving figures would thwart those ideas to promote or preserve their own situation. I don't bother with activism, or promote it, I think it's a waste of time, time that's better spent in ways that will bear fruit, we are a very long way from utopia, and all things considered, it'll never happen.

As I get older the politics get more Goofy. And then there is the ultimate in shear stupid. And she is the dumbist person walking on the face of the earth, "AOC". She cannot walk and pick her nose at the same time. She lends new credence to the term "Airhead". If she broke wind with force she would be a true airhead.
I still think Nancy Pelosi is her Mother. You would need to Brain Wash both of them with a good douche or an enema.

Since I once complained about politics here, even though I recanted, I am approaching hypocrite status...but I can't resist the last two posts. I think the aforementioned politicians have their insect collections in their heads, most likely diptera.

Nevertheless, I think you should at least think about before claiming things in a forum and making yourself ridiculous.
I am still shocked by the reaction to my first thread after several years. Of course everyone thinks his own part. I received a lot of funny mails, thanks for.
For example, to talk about a butterfly industry with this nickname. INDUSTRY... no comments needed. And how wrote about the organizer is may a *little* far away from this planet.
Let's say a child or teenager is interested in insects and posted something here. May wrong, may very wrong. It doesn t matter. There aren't that many young people who are interested in. And then there is a reaction like that. A young person has no idea how to react to it. For me it's totally shameful and embarrassing. Finally sad at all.
It's your decision to just accept that... Is there any other good US forum like that? May with less collecting and more breeding butterflies and insects?

There are no stupid questions. Just stupid answers. I've answered some of the most clueless questions from buyers when I sell livestock on Ebay, which I do when I can to spread things around, and reach different people that might not know about Insectnet.
Then there is a language issue at times with persons in different countries, amazingly enough, not everyone speaks English fluently.
There may be other forums, probably on platforms like that one...that everyone assumes we all use- Face...something.
Also amazingly, all of us were beginners at one time, and I don't expect anyone to listen to their parents, God knows I didn't, but if you can't say something nice, keep quiet.

I watched that briefing, and the same thing can be said of many questions the reporters ask.
I'm still going to stand by my "there are no stupid questions". I've seen stupid people ask questions however, and there's a subtle difference.

Seen from France (or elsewhere), it is obvious that the Trump and Bolsonaro are great destroyers of the environment and biodiversity. Just as the Nuremberg Tribunal to try crimes of genocide was created, a new international tribunal should be established to try crimes of ecocides where these two demagogic leaders would be the first accused!
That said, it is better, in an entomological forum, not to deal too much with questions of politics and religion!

I am no Trump fan. However, the man knows how to make money, and lots of it. He also has a great taste in women. And I would bet some serious coins, she goes to bed "Naked" every night.
I will bet some serious coin He gets re-elected, and by a very large margin.
Bill Clinton climbs into bed with Hillary every night. Bill must take matters into his own hands.
And if the Democraps put forth Biden as the challenger, it will be four more years of "The Donald".
Now think about this. What if Melania would run for President in 2024?
I do not argue about politics. I am not a Republicon, nor a Dumbocrat. I just a good old Lepidopterist with an incredible sense of humor.
And I am having lunch with my lady friend today.

Melania was not born in the USA, so she cannot run for President.

Just imagine if Melania could run for President. You must admit, the Donald has an excellent taste of women. Then take look at what Bill Clinton is married too.....
I hear all the criticism of Trump. Regardless of what the Donald does. He has Melania. And Bill Clinton still goes to bed with Hillary or alone on the Sofa. And Billy Boy must take matters into his own hands.
Having said all of that. I have a lunch date.

The idea of Melania running for president does have legs... pun intended. I suppose it is best that only persons born in the country can be president, although we did miss having a Presidentator with Arnold, but politics is a dirty game, even Clint Eastwood stopped at mayor of Carmel, although I remember reading something about him crushing someone's car that parked in his Mayor's parking spot, you gotta like that. If you think about it, what would be the real difference if we voted based on "other things" rather than what the candidate claimed they were going to accomplish for the people. Probably not a lot.
