Do you think 90 usd is good price for 110 mm prosopocoilus giraffa keisukei male?
Sorry for my English, I am using a translator.

Hi Goat,
I see that Insect-Sale (see banner on the home page) has 90mm specimens for $8.00 - seems a big jump from $8 to $90 for 20mm in size. Are 110mm specimens that rare? I'm not a lucanid collector so I really don't know the values, but it does seem odd that folks will pay an extra $10-50 for a couple of millimeters in length. A bug can vary in length by a couple of mm just based on the angle that one is looking at the ruler!
Cheers! Bandrow

the price depending on length for Lucanid is not linear (more asymptotic), there is a very big difference at this level between 90 and 110 mm ... the price with 6 numbers are due for difference of no more than 1 mm.

Hi Africaone,
I see the same effect in the Cerambycidae in the case of Titanus - every 10mm equals another $100 or more. In reality, one could place a 110mm specimen next to a 120mm specimen and from 4 feet away, they'd look the same size. I have acquired many great species for my collection at low prices by going after the "small" specimens - and while not trophy size, they all are nice additions. But I am more interested in species representation than trophy-sized bugs. Each to his own!
Cheers! Bandrow

I purchased a 116 some years ago. NOT CHEAP. no regrets however, as you dont see them at that size very often.

I have a 115mm specimen obtained about 10 yrs. ago, in exchange with K. Thorne, that was valued @ $45.00 USD. Perfect A1 & a real bargin compared to today's prices. The world record specimen, @ that time, was reported (on the internet...) to be a monster of 128mm! Anyone own or know of more current larger specimens? John K.

But that probably was close to world record for ssp. Daisukei. That size is also hard to reach in breeding, so the price probably is somewhat realistic. I remember buying 110+ keisukei from Indonesia 10 or so years back, for 20 usd. Good value increase Cheers Ben

An 86mm (world record?) Dynastes granti was once offered for only $40US on Insectnet.

Just found it in my notes: A correction to my recent 10 Nov. 2018 post - The world record size for a male Prosopocoilus giraffa keisukei from Flores Isl. was 124mmm (not 128mm); still a monster & said to be found in either a German or Japanese collection... imagine the price one could command for it now!
