Hiya! Insects fascinate me, and at times, even repulse me! I consider myself an amateur naturalist, mostly self-learned; book taught. My absolutely favorite insect is the mantis. There's something very 'alien' about them with their very large eyes.
Ever since I was old enough, I spent countless hours in the woods by my house and exploring the many ponds and streams in the NY area.
I am concerned, however, the decline of the bee population, the fact that I am having difficulty finding some of the insects in my area that used to be plentiful (the unintended result of the state's mosquito spraying program?)… well, it seems I have to now conduct my 'research' on the Net and not in 'the field.' Finding answers to my questions, not by viewing behaviors in the 'wild' but reading about them online.
Thankfully, I found this forum which I plan to browse regularly and learn from all you fascinating people.
Take care.

Well I guess I am a new "old" member since I have been on this for over ten years but had to reregister for technical reasons (I think). I have been interested in Lepidoptera since I was around 12 years old but have slowly focussed on moths, then Saturniidae, now mainly US saturniids (70 years next month). I collect and rear when I am in the US but have lived in Mexico mostly for a few years now. mainly into AZ sats and Hemileuca. in last few years.

I was stung three times in the neck and head by an unknown insight I just got a quick glimpse and it was a long black one. The Sting kept stringing four hours and was really painful. Anyway three months later I went to the doctor for a routine check up and my platelet level was 1.4 million I put it down to the insect sting but the doctor laughed at me. It took three years for my platelets to go back to normal. Does anyone know if this could have been thereresult of the Sting if it was in fact tarantula Hawk wasps ?

Thanks for that, Adam. It got old real quick.
Anyway, I'n 70 and been a Lepidopterist collecting for 60 years. Collected around the world while in the Marine Corps for 21 years. Many great memories. I'm a landscape contractor now here in North Carolina and have 27 different butterflies that breed in my yard. Most larvae are killed off by wasps, but enough survive to remain resident populations. I seldom collect any longer for past 20 years or so, but maintain an active interest via this internet platform. Many thanks to all who have been posting here over the years and always great to see new members here from all around the world.
As a group, we do need to step up to the plate and push back against the destruction of habitat. As a landscaper, I try to install as much native vegetation as practical into my designs and also work to that effect as a County Commissioner when possible.

Hello everyone,
I'm a beetle breeder in Taiwan and I have breed beetles for over 10 years. My favorite beetles is Chalcosoma sp, they are big and a little dangerous, ha ha. Can't wait to share these beetles with you.
