It is unfortunate that this new forum does not have a user section where everyone can enter their real names and locations; if I'm having a discussion with someone on the forum I like to know who I'm talking to. The old forum allowed everyone to enter their names, I know not everyone did but I think they should have been forced to. Everyone knows who the regular contributors are but there are several occasional contributors who hide behind their user names and don't give their real names. I'm particularly thinking of the chap who's been arguing with Thierry Bouyer on the Charaxes murphyi thread; although Thierry goes by the user name of "africaone" we all know who he is, none of us know who this "norton" is.
Is there any way of forcing all users to register their real names and locations, if not in the user section, maybe in a thread? I don't see why anyone should have a problem with this as if you've got anything to hide you shouldn't be contributing to this forum.

If I have to publish my full name and location here, I would leave this forum. It would be bad about it, but for me it is a basic principle to avoid publishing any personal information in the web. Not because I have to hide something. If you will ask me for my full name and adress, I would tell you. But I would not write this in the web. I would also register me here with full name and adress, if it would be neccesary. But not if everybody could read it. I can't tell you an accurate reason, it's just a feeling it is better this way. For example my wife is working with psychic ill people, and we have made bad experiences once when one found out our adress. I have leaved the German insect forum (actias.de) for this reason.

I left the German insect forum too for the same reason ( and a few other things ).
I also don't get a 100% why you want to have the name of a person, if you don't agree with what I write in here for example you can simply think "nomihoudai is a stupid/strange guy", it is merely the same as thinking " Claude Sinner is a stupid/strange guy ", but for the difference that it lets my private life, and my name out of question. I don't need to know the real names of every single person in here. I'm happy whenever I can meet someone in real life on fairs but in here I just don't have the urge of unnecessary data collecting.

OK Claude, but there is a problem when some people accuse other people without giving their own name.

...well I also participate in another Forum where there isn't even a username. Maybe I got used too much at being insulted by unknown people ;D

I also do not want to give my full address here. But where is the problem to tell your country ? I think it would be easier to communicate. Let me explain. If you read my bad english you can see that I am German and learned english only in school. If someone writes: today I took this picture of a butterfly in my backyard, what is it? You can see the country and determination could be easier. Or if someone has problems with importing butterflies in "my country" ...... or .. This is only my opinion. Kind regards Dietmar
Claude, dein Problem war sicher anders als das von Hannes. Die "few other things" haben überwogen.

I wouldn't suggest that anyone should give their full address, just country and general area.
I really can't see the problem with giving names. I've enjoyed meeting several people at fairs and meetings in both Europe and the States whose names I've recognised from this forum and the Actias one, I wouldn't have realised who they were if they hadn't given their full names. Also when people are putting their points across on various topics (as in the example I gave above) we can get a better idea of whether they know what they're talking about if we know who they are and thereby what they've published.
Obviously we can't make it compulsory, but I for one wonder what people have got to hide if they're reluctant to give their full names.

I understand your POV but I feel bad to have been personally attacked by someone that revendicates to be anonymous and just to free himself from what seems a frustration. + I appreciate much more the post if i know who posted it, the discussion is more reliable and fair.

Bob,
I've got no problem telling people my name - in fact I make a point of signing my (real) name after ALL of my posts.
I've got no issue if people don't want do disclose their FULL name but I do think that people should indicate their first name...purely because it's a bit impersonal replying to posts from someone with their forum name only. I'd much rather start a post "Dear Bill/Bob/John etc etc" than "Dear crazyusername".
Just my thoughts,
Simon

I agree with Simon......or so he says that is his name My username is SO complicated that 'billgarthe' really stands for something else.....................not my name. b beetles i idalia l lexias l lepidoptera g garleppiana a anaxibia r real crazy about insects t turtles h hyalophora e elaphus Really now..... I do not mind using my real name, but will not post address or email for safety reasons. If someone REALLY wants to know such data, I believe they CAN find out. Did you all notice that turtles are a part/interest of mine??? I am not just limited to insects. Oddly, one of my pet box turtles was named after one of our fellow collectors. I won't reveal the collector's name, but the turtle is named Eric as it somewhat resembles Eric the collector ;D

It would be nice to know exactly who you are talking to I must agree, but I can understand people not wanting their full names and addresses in the 'public domain' for various reasons. However I can't see the harm in using a real first name and at least the country where you live. Many times I have looked at a 'what bug is this' post for example and wished the person had put where they lived so I have a better idea of what I am looking at. Dave, Northfllet, Kent, U.K.

I enjoy having my name out there - and the more positive data I can generate about myself online the better, especially when I'm applying for jobs...
No reason to even think about requiring people to add their real names on here though. It doesn't bother me that some people choose to remain anonymous.
But the one downside is other people who share your name can drag it through the mud. Some pedophile in the UK with my name was arrested, but thank god his photo was posted with the story! Now I'm just trying to get enough links to the real me and get this pedophile result pushed off of the first page of google search results! It's very obviously not me, but I still hate that he has my name...

i think we are speaking on two different things - to know with who we are speaking on the forum ! (I personnaly would like to know that) i.e. I know who is bobw and then when he posted, I am very interested by what he wrote as i have a kind of confidence in his words. Not the case of someone i don't know that will post something new for me and for which i will have diificult to decide if it is of confidence or not ! add the fact that the personalisation of a talk is more friendly. - how to preserve a kind of anonyma regarding the invasion of the web in the life ! I completely agree that it can happen a pervese effect to put your personal information on the net (the most simple to understand is the email used by phisher or so, one the worst is those like of Chris, there are very much more).
