Found new hawk moth at light last night - Sphinx perelegans, Elegant Sphinx. So fun to find a new big moth aAfter so many years of just White Lined Spinx.

We get a lot of them down here in LA County. Get a female and put her in a paper bag. She'll lay eggs. The larvae can be reared on Cercocarpus.

Thank you Clark for host plant info. The moth was a male. This was the first one of this species I have ever seen in Santa Cruz County CA sence I moved here about 23 years ago. I did check the check list and it was not listed there. There is another list that I know about and will check to see if it is listed there.

Are you sure it is perelegans? There are several other very similar species.

Yes I am sure of the ID. I very carefully looked at sphinx on moth photographers group. There were some similar ones there but the pattern of gray markings matched perelegans perfictly.
