What kind of flying insect is this?

Hey,

My brother got bitten or stung by an insect the other night, but found four of the same type in his bedroom
They were 7mm long, black, had two wings and is from South Australia. Here's a picture....

I believe what you've got there is a little Carpenter Bee/Wasp problem. These insects bore holes in wood (furniture in your case) to make nests. Your brother's bedroom might have a nest somewhere. Don't worry, though. These insects don't live together in large numbers, so you won't find yourself pitted against a deadly swarm.
