"Four previously unknown species of snakelike creatures have been found in California — but don't call them snakes; they're legless lizards. Prior to the discovery of the new species, there was only one known legless lizard species in the United States: the California legless lizard."
Well, they got that wrong, so perhaps there are other errors involved as well. The Slender Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus attenuatus)is a legless species confined to the Great Plains and southeastern US. We have it commonly in sand dunes in NW Indiana.
But non-the-less, this is pretty cool news and demonstrates how much more there is to learn

This is my pet legless lizard,Rex. I've had him over 28 years now, he's a giant "glass snake" Ophisaurus(Pseudopus) apodus aka a scheltopusik. He's 3 feet long and weighs 2.5 pounds (around 1 kg). He likes to eat slugs, snails and mice as well as locusts. The European Union banned the import of this species a few years ago, so only available captive bred now and very difficult to get. He's a great pet, really tame, never bites, very active and easy to maintain. Johnny
