Peter Smetacek of Nainital, N India sent me the following, and I thought it might be interesting or useful to post it here:
Dear friends,
With the passage of a new bill under consideration in the Rajya Sabha, natural history studies will become illegal without official permission. Cattle will have more right to our environment than citizens. Breeding a caterpillar at home will become a punishable offence.
These are some of the effects of a poorly thought out effort to curb poaching. The accompanying petition seeks to draw the presidents attention to the fact that the current amendments will affect the letter and spirit of the constitutionally enjoined duties of Indian citizens and requests that the proposal be modified accordingly.
We need many people to support this petition, so that it attracts due attention. After all, we surely do not want to be victimized for caring for our surroundings. Please sign this and help bring about the necessary change, even if you are not directly interested in studying the environment. It will help those of us who do! Thank you!
In addition, I am attaching links to two news reports in reputable papers about the perceived effects of this bill, which are comical, to say the least.
Hoping you take out time to sign this petition,
Warm regards,
Peter
