P. nireus has a pointed valve (what is commonly called a 'clasper') whereas P. sosia has a rounded valve on the male genitalia. Thus it is not so difficult to separate nominate nireus and sosia by looking at the male abdomen from the side. Unfortunately 'bromius' cannot be easily separated from sosia using this character, as it also has a rounded valve, although it is slightly less rounded than that of sosia.
Hancock, 1984 treats ufipa as a ssp. of thuraui, and describes it thus:
Recorded from SW Tanzania (Ufipa: Chala, Mbizi, Mbuzi; Rukwa: Milepa) In this subspecies the blue-green bands are relatively narrow (5-6 mm on forewing, 6-7 mm on hindwing). The satiny underside markings are apparently present, but weak.
Kielland, 1990, reinstated it as a good species based on male and female genitalia. He only says the following about how to separate it from other nireus group species: Distinguishing external characters are in particular the very large underside white postdiscal markings of the f.w.
Adam.
