I was messing around a little bit with MS paint and made this plate, please note that the original specimens are A- and the female can even be considered A2 ( got a green patch after relaxing too long ) Edit: v.2, straightened antennae, added signature.

Personally I much prefer to see specimens in their original, unenhanced condition; I'll never understand this obsession with perfect specimens

Hi Bob I wouldn't call myself obsessed with perfection. The specimen is as it is in the second pic in my collection and I am happy with it I don't even use the grades of A1 to whatever I only mentioned it here for the other collectors to be able to imagine themselves. I look at this from a more artistic site. I have not always been a collector, sure not when I was a kid. I spent most of my time drawing the butterflies from books and I had a wonderful book with drawn insect plates. I look at this MS paint pics as the combination of the great plates produced in 18th-19th century combined with the modern technology at our disposal nowadays. It is great how easily the human eye can be tricked. Some parts in the male pic and in the ventral pic are drawn by hand could you tell me which ones ?

Claude, I did the same with a female maculinea arion, I was NOT pleased to say the least, all the other arion in the relaxer were fine but I'm left with a horrible green patch on that one and there is nothing I can do about it.

Yes I am not pleased about the green patches either but I got used to it it happened so far to nearly every Lycaenidae I mounted ... Even the male had some very tiny green patches, edited them out. I think I will try to do a few more of these plates this week if I find the time.

I think the picture is great Claude, I must confess to 'Photoshopping' a few of my photos when the moths are not too good but only for showing others how they should look if they were A1 specimens. I actually quite enjoy taking a photo of an A2 moth and making it into a pristine specimen, I spend ages playing! Dave

nice work on this, you should think of doing a reference book of butterflies of your area, as good as any reference book i've seen.

Many thx Rich ! If I would do that I would not include Glaucopsyche lygdamus in that case (I'm from the middle of Europe) Funny thing tough is that I have already been asked taking pics for a book on all Lycaena helle ssp. ... unfortunately I must say that I screwed up, my knowledge of photography was wayyyyy too little back then. Hopefully I can save the pics soon or I will have to do the travel trough all Germany again to find most holotypes Also thx for you Dave, see the thread "the power of MS Paint", there you can see a Celastrina argiolus changing from A2 to A1
