Sony DSC-T900. No editing.
So my question to all you experts out there: did she really taste with her feet, or did she do a visual, or perhaps sensed the banana's fumes with her antennae? Or all of the above? How did she know to extend her proboscius within a split second after touching the banana?

Having worked with many Monarchs ( rescue them in winter when they get knocked down out of the trees by storms in winter ) they topically may smell a sent at a distance with antenna be for they land on say a rotten banana. But they also can taste with the feet. This I proved after applying some very sweet smelling hand disinfectant then picking up one of my butterflies. It immediately sent out its tung to investigate the sweet taste it felt with its feet. Sight is help full for a Monarch when looking at things that are far away. A purple color will say very attractive flowers to a Monarch when seen at a distance. A butterfly will most likely smell the sweet perfume of the flowers from far away as well with antenna. Touching the flowers with its feet will help it to zoom right in on a nectar rich spot as I saw some non releasable Buckeye Butterflies do when offered flowers.
