Been to Madeira once before, it really depends what you pretend to collect there, but I don't think you will have much luck with Leps that late in the year.

Yes, I think so also. So it would be important to know some good places.

I've been to Madeira 3 years ago in october ! Most of the island is protected area (the center of the island ) and there are policia forestal ! Note that a big part of the forested area burnt (4 years ago and also a big fire this year, Pico Arriero area), set up by a pyroman !!!!! I found in october P. xiphia, H. maderensis (very worn), D. plexippus, Lycaena phlaeas phlaeoides, L. pirithous. I think in december not much is flying arround , except for the endemic P. xiphia ! Expect also a lot of rain during these months !!!!! If you want more info , sent me a message !
Good luck !
David

Also, be aware that there's a dengue epidemic going on in there. I suffered from dengue in Argentina 2 years ago, trust me, you don't want to pass trough the same experience :- )
