It has been rather quiet in here the last 2 days but I guess people started their collecting season. Two days ago I went with a friend light trapping and baiting here in Southern Germany. It was an open field with a few old fruit trees around. Not the best habitat but at least an electricity and beer source had not been far away The weather was pretty warm at dusk, around 15°C but quickly cooled as there were no clouds in the sky. We light trapped with 40W black lights and used red wine with fruit tee and sugar as bait. As we are now in a transition phase between winter and spring we got a bit of both species groups: Spring species: Achlya flavicornis Orthosia cerasi Orthosia cruda Orthosia gothica Orthosia incertaWinter species: Conistra rubiginea Conistra rubiginosa Eupsilia transversaNo micros or Geometridae around as it was too cold. How is the season for the rest of our holarctic user base? Could you already start into 2012? Attachments:

I have all these moths from trading and exchange. Here in Illinois, it's been very warm. I'm seeing insects that I wouldn't expect to see until April or May. Example, two Papilio polyxenes, two Nymphalis antiopa, two Vanessa atalanta, numerous Pieris rapae, Colias eurydice, and Staphylinus cinnamopterus=Staphylinidae and other beetles which I haven't had time to identify, yet.. I'm still seeing winter moths, yet. Don't expect other species to emerge until next month. Jeff Prill

Yeah, there are a lot of things out early in Wisconsin too! For butterflies I have only seen a Nymphalis antiopa and a Pieris rapae, but I have seen a lot of moths. Also, a few days ago I found a june beetle (phyllophaga sp.) active in March!

Yes I already heard from the US that the flight times of some species would be unusual and weird weather. I can not tell the same here in Europe, we just have business as usual as I would say as the species that you would expect are on the fly and nothing else. I have also seen some butterflies Dave, Gonepteryx rhamni, Aglais urticae, Polygonia c-album and many many Nymphalis polychloros that are having a splendid year once again. From the pupae hatched species I could only see Pieris rapae but I guess it won't take that much time now until Anthocharis cardamines males will get out. It is nice to have butterflies emerge once again. In January I told a Spanish friend that it will only take 2 more months now until butterflies reappear and then he asked what I mean by reappear. He either was kidding me or was truly shocked at the idea that there might not be any butterflies around at all during winter, the longest he had not seen one was like a week

As of March 15th I had 85 species of moths collected. Since then, I've had 2 light sheet trips and have added 2 Saturniids, 1 Sphingidae, and lots of other species that normally fly in April. I must have a good 20-30 new species since the 15th.
Jan-Feb had lots of a few species (Psaphida, Phyllodesma, Phigalia, Orthosia, Egira, Feltia, Leucania), but now diversity is increasing but lots of singletons of lots more species.

I saw two Psychomorpha epimenis-Noctuidae, Agaristinae, ie. The Grapevine Epimenis. I didn't expect to see them until April or May. Also, I saw several Spring Asures, and found a dead female along the side of a road. Very early for both of them. Beetles: Coleomegilla sp.= Coccinelidae, Selenophorus and Stenolophus ssp. Carabidae. I ddn't keep them because I have numerous records already. The Red Bud trees are blooming and I was checking them for Henry's Elfin. I didn't see any. Jeff Prill
