Butterflies appearing early in central CA. Saw A Satyr Comma and Spring Azure be for the cold front came through. It was in the 60s and 70s last week. Now we are at winter tempretures of 40s to 50s. Will be in 60s again by end of the week. An Anna's Hummingbird has two babies in a nest in one of our trees - another sine of an early spring.

I'll be looking to buy native Calif. butterfly pupae for a live butterfly exhibit this spring & summer. Anything but pipevine and mourning cloaks. So start rearing. I'm interested.

Walked in the woods along one road, yesterday, and saw several jumping spiders moving about in 40 degree weather. Also, I've been seeing ants when inspecting aluminum cans along roadsides, while collecting cans for extra money. Various beetles being found under bark of dead trees during the daytime, and of course our usual assortment of winter months, Lithophanes, Orthosia, Pseudorthosia, Copavaleria grotei, and Eutolype species including grandis with the vivid brass band on the forewing. But then, I've seen these moths in winters at lights when snow is on the ground. I'm just glad that I didn't need to grow feathers and fly south this winter. Jeff Prill

Almost nothing flying yet out here. It was 24 this morning and we have snow flurries now.

Strange, I thought these would be emerging later, but I saw two japanese beetles, today flying. The temperature was in the sixties in Peoria, Illinois, today. I didn't expect them to be out until June. Jeff Prill
