Hello everyone!
It has been a while since I was active at this forum and this is my first post at the new forum. A short re-introduction might be in order. My name is Tom and I am from Finland (living in Sweden for a few years now though). I have been collecting butterflies all my life and for the last 10 years I have travelled a bit in the tropics collecting.
I have never visited Indonesia and it has become a gap in my collection that I want to do something about. I have wanted to visit the North Maluku (Moluccas) islands for some time. Time and money always being the unfortunate limiting factor I am currently planning on limiting my trip to Halmahera and Obi, but Ceram would certainly be an interesting addition to the itinerary if I can manage. As Sulawesi seems to be a a relatively easy location I will probably do a pit-stop there as well.
I have done some basic research, but would like to hear first-hand experiences from people who have collected in these locations. I am especially interested in learning about the most favourable seasons, locations, and of course how and where to find local collectors/guides at the locations.
From what I have read Halmahera and Obi do not have very pronounced seasons so I would suppose collecting would be good year-round but would be very grateful for confirmation on this.
Sulawesi, however, does have a rainy season and a dry season. In Sulawesi my current plans include the south-west (around Makassar/Bantimurung) and the hilly country near Palopo. I know that at least in the south-west the rainy season is from october to March, but is the rain of the constant character or is it more of the clear mornings/showers in the afternoon type? I have no information about the seasons around Palopo.
Due to work I am limited to travel either during summer or around Christmas.
I would be very grateful for any information/advice!
I am also trying to locate literature on the Maluku butterflies, but will post more details on that in the "Book Reviews" section, which I suppose is the correct place for that.
Thank you in advace!
