I have been using Roman Holynski 's book that includes biological keys to the species of Chrysochroa and Megaloxantha buprestids.
Without drawings showing the anatomy, or better descriptions of terms, I have struggled for days ( more like weeks really ) trying to use know beetles for characteristics he uses.
I need help with:
subhumeral anguliarities
prometasternal ledge
costae, intercostae, interstriae
Please help !

Hello Jeff, It isn't as easy as just looking at pictures since many species vary considerably. I used trial and error with "known" beetle species and had some success. Then i got an email from the author helping me out. I still would do better with drawings; I am not a verbal learner.

All of the characteristics that you are baffled about require personal judgment. I usually try to draw out the characters, and see if they match what I see on the insect that I'm identifying. It's simply a matter of making an educated guess, sometimes. Also, there is a book at BioQuip Buprestidae of the world. If you can't afford it, look it up on the BioQuip website and then try to find it through interlibrary loan. The title is Buprestid Beetles of the World Vol. 4. Authors are Akiyama, Koyo & Sudahiro Ohmomo. Last quoted price is $390.00.
