Lymantria dispar: I saw this "For Sale: Lymantria dispar" add in the classifieds. This is the Gypsy Moth!! The defoliator of our NE forests. As owner of Leptraps, I have sold hundreds of Light Traps to monitor and track their spread. Now some one in the Netherlands is offering them for sale.
Gypsy Moths are not a problem in Europe, but they have sure eaten a large portion of our eastern forests. Should some one in the western half of the United States purchase these as OVA and sneak them in through the mail, and then accidentally let the loose. It may however fix the wild fire problem in California. Once the Gypsy Moths consume the trees, there will be nothing left to burn.
Do we not learn for our past mistakes?

The Gypsy Moth has already made it to California - around the Ojai area in Ventura. If anything it would probably increase fire potential by letting more sun through the canopy and drying out the grasses and shrubs even faster.

That is one of the few species that are banned from being sold here in the U.K.
