About 10 days ago I took my 2 younger kids (14 & 9) out to a wooded area where we have set up our MV light rig before. We were hoping to catch the end of the Actias luna hatch around here. We set up shortly after dark. The light was attracting a lot the typical small moths, misc. small beetles and other small insects. After a while of not much happening the kids were getting tired so they went into the truck to rest. I was sitting in a chair directly behind the sheet nodding off every now and then. I then took another look at the sheet & there was the silhouette of the Luna moth. I quickly grabbed the net & scooped it up. I opened the truck door & poked my son who said "What?" in a tired daze. I told him to look in the net. You should have seen his eyes light up when he realized what I had netted! Attachments:

Great story and thanks for sharing. I bet your boy will remember that day for a long time, I still can remember extraordinary specimen from my early childhood just like it was yesterday that I saw them.

I agree entirely. Thanks for posting this story. I have a 4 year old grandson who is fascinated with the moths & beetles I bring home. It's almost as if I am seeing them for the first time through his eyes.

Great story! Just today, I found a wandering luna caterpillar near a hickory tree in my yard. I grabbed it and put it in with some leaves and within a few hours it had turned from green to maroon/brown and begun spinning up for the winter. Hopefully it will be successful and not parasitized--- and would be great if it's a female so we can use it next spring to call in males. Enjoy the time with the kids as much as possible... my son has reached the age where stuff that Dad does isn't nearly as cool as it used to be.
