Indeed, a well-known Roman scholar named Nigidius (upon first seeing) specimens of Europe's stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) called the beetle lucanus after the Italian region of Lucania where they were used as amulets.

Now that you mention it, I do recall having once read something about L. cervus amulets.

I suppose the correct name should be Cervus lucanus which would translate to Lucanian stag or Stag from Lucania.

And there is a genus of Lucanidae called Nigidius too, presumably named after him. Adam.

I am preparing a paper explaining the all story (the core is Nigidius) ... will be published soon.
