Hey everyone - for those who are not members of the Southern Lepidopterists Society (everyone should be!), there is a new article by Vernon Brou regarding the National Forest policy on collecting. In short, it is a refresher letter specifically regarding the SE USA National Forests that says YES, you can collect without hassle! It comes on official letterhead and outlines the specific policies. You should staple it to the front of your 1998 copy of their policy letter before this season gets started. Of course I've blogged about it and uploaded the article and letter, I suggest you take a look and download a copy here (.pdf). Also, while you're on my blog, I invite everyone to follow me and/or friend me on facebook! You should see the option on the right side of my blog as you scroll down. Chris

Awesome Chris, thanks for providing that.
Most of us probably know, but just a side note for those who collect in the states. Don't confuse a Nat. Forest with a Nat. Park. It is absolutely illegal to collect in a Nat. Park without a specific permit. In case there is any question - Nat. Forest are run by the Dept of Agriculture specifically the Forest Service and Nat. Parks are ran by the Dept. of Interior. Also be careful you don't confuse Nat. forest with State parks. Some State parks are ran like Nat. parks and you can get fined by State park rangers.
a specific example is Papilio indra kiababensis. although not on a protected list and found outside of Grand Canyon Nat. park it is highly illegal to collect them within the park where they are most commonly found.
Just be careful and CYA.

Thanks for adding that note - everyone has probably seen the breakdown I've written, but it's probably a really confusing thing for people coming from overseas.
If you get busted collecting in TX State Parks without a permit they arrest you!

Texas is a bit of a problem anyway. I was fined because I was sitting in a car when the driver got out of the car and picked up a dead rattlesnake from the road. I was accused of hunting because I was in the car. The driver had a hunting permit but the snake was already dead. I found out later it was run over by the officer who fined me. I was told to pay the judge $170 or spend the night in jail. When I chose jail, they let me go.
