Blue Underwing Moth, Catocala fraxini on pavement, found by my son near our house in Petts Wood, Kent, England. Becoming more common but still a rare find. Lots of aspen and poplar growing locally in woods so quite possibly a local colony has become established. Johnny imgur.com/a/ZDVFM7S

That is indeed a large and splendid species !
Our forum member Nomad posted an informative thread on Britain's Catocala species on the ICF forum. He also provided some pictures featuring specimens from Oxford's historic collection.
I have managed to get 8 very fine large (bred) examples from sellers in Poland and Romania over the years. However, I have nothing from Great Britain.
I'd say it's probably one of the finest species in the whole of Europe !

Yes, I agree that it is a fine species. I have one specimen that was captured in Hamstreet Woods, East Sussex, UK in 1957. The aspen and poplar were cut down and it went extinct there. I have one captive bred specimen too.
It appears to have re established in the UK with several colonies in southern and eastern England. Our local woodland has quite alot of aspen and sallow so it is likely that it is breeding locally to me, a very welcome addition if it is the case. One of the few benefits of global warming perhaps.

I think that is a very common specie in countries as Poland,I have so many papered from that country. Possibly in right localities. I have never seen this species in seven years ( 1983-1990) during my youth years in Poland, although as a teenager my travel was very limited.

All the Catocala fraxini that I have from Poland are collected in Zbaszynek.
