Last year (2017) I traveled to Suriname 4 times for work. Each time I couldn’t resist the temptation to collect a few interesting specimens.
I finally got them out of the freezer and spread. They are not all A1 but as they were new to me I saved them. Now it’s time to try identify them with your help. Thanks in advance, Tim

Mine was the powdery type. The boiling water is key! I pin my specimens to a Styrofoam block and float them in the plastic container. Then I wrap the container in a blanket to keep it hot.

Hi Adam, you may not be able to find Mr. Clean there but any multi-purpose cleaner may work. The active ingredient in Mr. Clean is Sodium Hydroxide.
The majority of the mold comes off in the rinse. But a close inspection with a magnifying glass reviles remnants of mold. They look 100% better than they did and the mold hasn’t come back, but it is very dry here.
You can buy an ultrasonic toothbrush, I wonder if that would work?

I don't expect to make them look as good as they did before the flood, but would like to remove the caked mud from the wings and bodies if possible, even if that just exposes the real damage underneath. The brown marks that you can see in the photo are actually mud that dried on the specimens when the water drained away. If there is a way to make the mud fall off the wing scales there may be minimal visible damage, whereas I am sure that brushing it off dry will just remove the scales underneath as well. Fortunately these specimens are not really rare, but they do consist of series of specimens from various parts of Thailand with good data, so are of scientific interest. Adam. Hi Adam, first I feel under qualified to give you advice. Instead I will share some personal experience. I had some muddied butterflies from Panama from when I got caught in a flash flood. They didn't have caked on mud, but were dirty and dull even after hydrating and setting them very similar to the pictures you posted. I tried a few different things but here is what worked by far the best. I rehydrated them in a plastic container using boiling water and 1% Mr. Clean ( a muti-purpose cleaner that doesn’t contain phosphate, chlorine bleach or ammonia). The specimens only came in contact with the vapour. It only took about 2 hours for the wings to relax and start to rise. Then I removed them from the relaxing chamber and gently rinsed them under cold running water from the tap. After air drying for about an hour I reset them. Start with one at first, that’s what I did, there is a fine line between loosening the dirt and loosening the scales. This method worked well on moulded specimens as well. I would love to see some after pictures. Tim

I was fortunate to be there, on one of the few days every year, that the sun shines! Truly one of the highlights of my life. Tim

It would be very sad if we lost that treasure! I visited Mt Rosario in 2007 and back then you could clearly see the effects of logging. Attachment DeletedThis is a picture taken from Mt Rosario of the closest mountain, not much left, 7 years ago. Tim
