Hello all. As I am planning a trip to French Guiana next year, I am researching the habits and distribution of my top priority species; Coprophanaeus lancifer. If anyone has knowledge/experience with this beetle and doesn't mind sharing this knowledge, I would be extremely grateful! Thanks so much!

Hoping to pull off one of my "bucket list" experiences, I'm beginning to prepare for a collecting trip to French Guiana in 2020. So far, I've emailed to two Lodges that have been recommended by Insect Net contributors; Amazone Nature Lodge, and Patawa Lodge. So far, I have not heard back for three weeks. Can anyone tell me if they are still operational? As a coleopterist, my priority target specimens are Coprophanaeus lancifer, Acrocinus longimanus, Megasoma actaeon, Euchroma gigantea, and various Phanaeus, Cetoniids, and Cerambycid species. If anyone out there has had recent experience with these (or other) lodges, or can provide info on collecting these species (time of year, specific areas in FG, etc.) it would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks so much Insectnet family! Mike Seth

Still puzzled by the darkening of the elytra of various Nicrophorus spp. I have not exposed specimens to any killing agents or chemicals. I froze individuals, but noticed darkening about a day after they were pinned out. Any ideas/ experiences? Thanks

I guess I should add, is there any method to prevent discoloration of Nicrophorus spp?

Has anyone had success in restoring the darkening of the orange coloration in Nicrophorus spp (silphidae)carrion beetles? Although acetone baths help in various other beetle restorations, it hasn't worked for me with this group.

Has anyone been successful in using malt as a bait for collecting dung beetles? If so, what form of malt worked best and how was it prepared?

For pit-trapping various beetle species, literature often cites the use of "malt" as a bait/additive. Just curious to hear about your results, and what form (dry or liquid) and preparation you used successfully. Many thanks,
Mike Seth

I think most budding entomophiles noticed and perused the "offerings" from those radiator grills. I swear, though, that those mangled and disheveled specimens were what my entomology instructor used for our Entomology ID lab practicals!!

Hello All:
Just curious what might be on your Christmas List to feed or advance your entomological vice/addiction. I hope to get a new 1600 watt Generac generator (don't have a Honda budget) to power my 1,000 watt Metal Halide system.
Merry Christmas!

I'll weigh in with my two cent's worth and maybe shed some "light" on this thread. Mogul vs. standard base doesn't seem to make any difference, therefore go for the better price. In choosing MV or MH, it's all about wavelength and output. For insect attraction the higher the Kelvin temp, the better (Google the article, "The Color of Light"). I look for a rating of 5700K or higher (these bulbs have aquarium/horticultural applications). I've been able to find metal halide balasts on ebay for the cheaper MV bulbs, and have been extremely pleased with the results over the past 15 years. If clear, non-coated, self-ballasted bulbs meet these specs, go for it. A great place to purchases these bulbs is 1000bulbs.com No, I don't get a commission from these guys.

Google "Moths of Southeastern Arizona" There are instructions for making a lighting system on a "shoestring".
