I heard from a good source that Alex has reached a plea bargain in his case. No jail time but big fine, community service, and out of the business for awhile. Must not have had the paperwork in order as reported. Obviously a risky move to put a large number of specimens going through LAX. I wish Alex the best and hope that he gets back in the bug business at some point.

It seems to me that if this case was only about the paperwork not arriving on time that this case against Alex would have been dropped long by now. (Assuming the paperwork finally showed up). The last I heard, Alex was busy raising funds for his defense. The USFWS has no intention of being embarrassed because of this case so I have a really bad feeling about how this is going to turn out for Alex. I will continue to keep my fingers crossed for him.

Yes, it is definitely a fraud. Usually the "free" specimens have a huge shipping cost to get them to you. Any money sent to them is lost. There is a ring of scammers operating out of Germany. If you run into the name Frank Brummack beware as he will take your money and send nothing. The classified above should probably be removed.

Sadly there have been several scammers out there using the name Agusyanto Hasan. It would be good to verify his information to make sure it is him. All of the transactions I have had with him have been good although it has been awhile.

Zdeno - Interesting. I did not receive either one of these emails. Thanks.

The formula for dealing with African suppliers is simple - DO NOT EVER send money in advance. The African suppliers I work with are glad to ship first because they understand that is how our business transactions work and of course the best part for them is that they always get paid By the way Zdeno - If you are still out there. I still have not received the box of butterflies that you promised to send me. Almost a year now.

Definitely sounds like a fun time to me. What kind of snakes do you find?

Has anyone heard an update on this situation? I know Alex plead not guilty and was trying to gather some funds to defend himself but I have heard nothing in awhile.

Dealing with African suppliers can be a nightmare. The last few years I have built relationships in Cameroon, Uganda, and Tanzania. I still do not ever send money in advance as you are just asking for trouble if you do. Another tactic African suppliers use after you have paid for a few shipments is that they send unauthorized shipments of specimens with the hope that you will pay for them! I recently received 800 Phymateus leprosus that were not ordered or authorized by me. Adam has given some great advice above - plain and simple do not send these guys money in advance.

This is a very typical scam coming from Tanzania. Time and time again these people get someone for just the shipping. I have a couple of suppliers in Tanzania who I have been working with for quite awhile and I still don't send payment in advance. Sorry to hear that they took advantage of you!

Adam hit the nail on the head! Unfortunately, all of us who are active in buying insects from around the world have been burned at one time or another. (I just got an email from a gentlemen in the UK who lost $300 to an Indonesian scammer). The amount of money that mikelock34 has lost to Greg Watson is substantial. This kind of loss is just not acceptable. Greg has actively tried to defend himself on this forum as an honest trader. Until he makes things right with mikelock34 Greg just doesn't fit in the category of being an honest supplier. I very much appreciate the fact that Clark has made this forum available so that we can stay informed as much as possible. Hopefully the dialogue contained here will motivate Greg somehow to do the right thing.

The specimens that I got had just the very basic data, ie. country or origin. I suppose you could request more specific data.

I have done several transactions with this seller. Quality has been good and the service has been fast. I have not purchased Cites bugs though.

It should be noted that "Zdeno" on this thread promised to forward some specimens to me that he received from Musa. Those bugs have never been received by me and correspondence from Zdeno has stopped. Although I am glad that Zdeno stuck it to Musa, I don't appreciate the empty promise from Zdeno. Alas, finding honest people out there continues to become more and morde difficult.

This supplier uses multiple names. I am not sure why this is the case. I have done several successful transactions with him (with one of his other different names). He always ships to me without advance payment. I would use caution going forward with an order, but if he will ship without advance payment it should be ok.
