Yeah. So far I found 4 different kinds. C. splendida, sexguttata, scutellaris lecontei, and formosa generosa. I caught these in the spring though, so hopefully I can get some summer kinds this Thurday or Friday when I go there. Attachments:

Congrats, if you go by Manitowoc there was a remnant population of C. h. rhodensis 8yrs ago. Don't collect too many! PM if you ever want to trade, only unpinned specimens. After losing a few antennae and legs, started folding the antennae and legs inwards to prevent the nightmare of putting a Cicindela back together. Happy collecting

Hi All,
Just wanted to add one group to Leptraps list: The Ohio Coleopterists. Just Google the name and you'll find the website. Small group of really good guys in Ohio, all willing to help out new folks...

I've had the distinct pleasure of being able to collect as a trio for parts of the last 7 or so summers. Tom, Eric and I get together several times a summer and have a blast, although one might see us more like the Three Stooges. Just this summer, I met another great guy (Evan).....now......how will he feel being associated with the Stooges? Maybe he could be Shemp ;D
Yes, most of the time, one is a loner when it comes to insects. One had better love nature, being alone, and willing to please himself with the collection. I have met up with guys who seem more interested in touting how much they have or how rare something they have is. Such sessions do not last long.
Tomorrow morning, I will be happily mounting up 40 beetles from my recent trip to AZ while listening to classical music. I will be totally happy. Then I'll tend to my larvae, then probably chat with Eric or Tom.
Group collecting is fine if an understanding is present where competition for stuff is not at the forefront. In AZ, Eric and I worked a system and each of us knew the other guy's obsessions. For example, Eric had first dibs on any sphinx moths. So if only one was caught of given species, he would have it. If a second came in to the lights, then I would get it. Likewise, he knew my priorities (like Catocalas) and I would get that first one for them. Now, there were many more sphinx moths than cats, so I ended up with most all of the fewer cats that came to the lights. All ended great....we were both elated at all we got.
Clark, fine idea. How about shifting one of those CA shows to the midwest. CA is cool, but pretty far/expensive for us easterners.

Good idea posting your internal group rules Bill. I'd hate for a fist fight to break out over a single specimen. Classical music as well? My kids can't stand it when I play Chopin! FYI Miguel Serrano came to America to play in the Florida Orchestra as a violinist.
I have access to a super prime site but have yet to hunt it. I have a good friend who owns property with a state park on one side and a federal park on the other side of his property. He has brought me hundreds of moths which come to his porch light. I just have no time working 7 days a week.

Looking for a travel partner to visit AZ asap. Living in SoCal great collecting here. Have a large truck so thinking of renting a vehicle or ridesharing. Have supplies, extra net, extra kill jars, money, gems, detailed information. My focuses are Asilids and Cicindela. Willing to work out a route that would benefit both of us. Also will be looking for Pepsis,Scarabs,Longhorns, leps. Currently working as a gem miner its a physical job so we can hunt all day and night. Archilestris are on the top of my list but Willcox Playa also is on that list. PM me at gyna11@hotmail.com. Really excited to meet other enthusiasts. Who knows what we will find? Team work could be very helpful. Thanks Ian
Posted this in the classified under travel. Well not much of a lep guy, my main attachment are to robber flies, makes me doubt there would be any squabbling over specimens?. Want this to be fun and successful. My last experience with another collector was a hoot. Have been waiting 6mths excited.

InsectNet Trade Show
I used to collect with some members of the Southern Leps back in the 80's. Always good to have someone to talk to, but it does ruin concentration and the serenity of being in the field doing what you love best.
Carolina Leps is the local group here, but collecting is frowned upon, so I avoid socializing.

I used to collect with some members of the Southern Leps back in the 80's. Always good to have someone to talk to, but it does ruin concentration and the serenity of being in the field doing what you love best. This sums up my attitude as well. I go to meetings to talk, and socialize with people of similar interests. But my experiences in "group" collecting end in frustration. Intense collectors create a weird competitive atmosphere that just irritates me. My best experiences have been in Belize, where I usually have 2-3 other collectors along - always good friends I have known for years. We grab a bite of breakfast together at dawn, pack lunch (usually peanut butter and banana on tortillas!) and then usually don't see each other again until dusk. Occasionally, you pass them on a trail a few miles away from base camp, but the goal is to collect alone. In the meantime, we have all connected at our own levels with the habitats we are sampling, and at our own pace. I talk to people who do those "collecting trips to the tropics" enough to know that I would have to kill myself on those group forays. Too many obsessive personalities get involved on those trips for my taste. Shuey
