Both are abundant where they live. Both are protected. Both are found in collections. I find the question strange.

It is like asking which species is rarer, a cow or a water buffalo? The question doesn't make sense to me given the fact that none of them is rare.

As Claude says neither are rare, beautiful yes, rare no. And that's why CITES for insects is a total waste of time and money - they don't protect the very rare dull brown species, only some of the common beautiful ones. They should use the money they spend on administrating CITES for these species on HABITAT PROTECTION. If the habitat is safe there will always be insect species in it. Adam.

eBay is full of this kind of terminology to bump up prices with almost everything having a "rare" tag attached to it, if things were so rare they wouldn't find a mate, local, not often seen, hard to catch, hardly ever for sale are all more accurate descriptions.

I only saw two Papilio hospiton on my two week visit to the mountains of Corsica, abundant they were not when I was there. It was quite late in the season though, July. Celastrina argiolus was the only really common species, perhaps even one might say abundant.

what is the rarest animal in Alaska? An Elephant. You have to count the living ones, the eggs with probability to survice and develop to imagos. And that for years. So how ? Some moths live for 7 years as a pupa, you don´t see them but then they are common. So a silly question
And Adam, you are totally right, nature is reduced for palm oil, coffee, rubber etc. and space for men.
The rarest virus is smallpox, almost extinct and maybe, maybe in some laboratoeries.

I notice all these "World's" rarest butterflies are American ... it seems either the rest of the world doesn't count or they have no or little information about rare butterflies in other countries.

It is also worth noting that Papilio (Heraclides) aristodemus ponceanus is not rare at all ... in its native habitat, The Bahamas. It just occasionally gets blown in to Florida where it may breed for a generation or two and then die out again. It should be treated as an occasional visitor rather than a rare US species. I seem to remember that it has been taken off the US protected list and CITES because the US authorities declared it extinct in the USA.

I may be able to ID the worlds rarest butterfly since I caught the only known male of a particular Lycaenid. So it is far rarer, as far as science knows, than any of the species listed. But it’s not in USA or an Ornithoptera so it doesn’t count.

Hello all, a story from Mr. Treadaway he told me many years ago. He was in the Philippines and a guy told him that there is an old man who has a very very rare butterfly to sell never seen before. Ok no digital cameras at that time so he went there ( several miles to go with landrover ) and he met this man. The butterfly was a Morpho!
