Another news made by journalist who doesn’t have an idea about live cycles of Species he/she made report about. Danaus plexippus lives 2-6 weeks and winter population up to 7 months , not 2 weeks. Similarly V.cardui. I have never seen any species be able to fly in 3 minutes after emerge as per report ( dry wings ). All article is nothing but rubbish.
Spending thousands of dollars to conduct study of live cycle of butterflies and taking only 7 caterpillars ? Really ?

I think you're being over-critical of an article that is actually pretty well written for what it is, a short communication for the general public about a science experiment for children. The life expectancy numbers are simplified but within the range you provided. The author probably oversimplified by saying the wings dry when they meant inflate, but they didn't say they fly at 3 minutes. This isn't a graduate thesis in entomology, it's the equivalent to growing lima beans in a bag for a school project. You don't hear anyone complain that they didn't distinguish between the germination times of Peruvian and Guatemalan lima beans*. Appreciate it for being an earnest attempt to get kids interested in science and entomology. *disclaimer: I know nothing about lima beans, or where they're grown.
