So upon arrival on Guadalcanal last week, my ride took me to the Mendana hotel.
We pulled up to the front curb and I see a local guy step in front of the vehicle, carrying my butterfly net! I'm thinking maybe it's a Customs guy, having taken it from my bag and trying to return it?
He walks on, so I jumped out and started yelling to him. Finally he stops and I catch his eye, and luckily before I make any accusations I notice his net bag is white- mine I know is green. This is NOT my net! However, it proves to be a very chance encounter!
He (Alex) explained to me that he was in the hotel chatting with a visiting entomologist. So I rang the guy in his room, and we had a short while to exchange stories! And, he's a member on this forum!

I think I know who that was. You are lucky to have actually met the Lepidopterist version of Indiana Jones.

Reminds me of the time I met a well known Japanese Hesperiid researcher (Maruyama-san) along the roadside in Laos. When I got back to my hotel I found that he was staying in the room next to mine! That night he showed me how he photographed the genitalia of each fresh specimen and saved the photos to his laptop, as he said many species can only be distinguished accurately by examination of the genitalia.

It wasn't Laurie.
BTW, we made my second trip in/up to Gold Ridge and for the second time, caught nothing of interest. We did see a number of Ornithoptera (both Victoria and urvilleanus) but those are common as rats. I was, however, attacked by a lycaenid I've never seen before, we were sitting on the patio at the hotel when it (no kidding) tried to get into my mouth.

Well, Laurie told me he was in the Solomons last week, so there must have been at least 3 Insectnet members in the country at the same time. Mind you, Laurie could have been on another island, I didn't ask and he didn't say.

Well, Laurie told me he was in the Solomons recently, so there must have been at least 3 Insectnet members in the country at the same time. Mind you, Laurie could have been on another island, I didn't ask and he didn't say. Adam. LOL. Last I heard he'd had enough of Melanesian tribalism and politics. Figured he couldn't give it up. When we went up to Gold Ridge we were stopped at a roadblock. The spokesman said (in Pidjin) that they were under orders to allow nobody to continue to the mine, particularly no white men. Michael (the Honiara-based Ornithoptera farmer) had the foresight to bring along a "guide" who has a relative living in Gold Ridge village. Thus it took us 20 minutes to talk our way through. On the return trip at the roadblock a tough looking guy approached the vehicle. Turns out, he was waiting specifically for us...uh oh. However, he is one of the landowners of Mount Popomanasou, and they'd be happy to lead expeditions for a small fee.

Hi Charles, nice meeting you at Mendana! What an odd coincidence! Hope Alex puts my net that I left him to good use. Kirk

What a chance encounter- if I'd arrived one minute sooner or later we'd have never met! Hope you found some bugs in Gizo. I left my net with Michael, so Guadalcanal has a net gain of two nets.

I am very interested in obtaining any papered specimens Needed for scientific revisionary research 2.pdf (536.22 KB) of moths of the genus Eudocima from the Solomons. I fact, just this week my latest publication appeared in print on this genus includes three new species descriptions of Eudocima moth species, including one from the Solomon Islands. See attached request for research material and contact information.
