My Automeris zephyria which I reared last summer on Cherry and Redbud started eclosing. Yesterday the first hatched, surprisingly a female, and today another pair. They are very stunning silkmoths, one of my new favorites. Hopefully I can get some paired up and get some eggs.

What is the typical mating time for these and is it unusual that mine are hatching in the afternoon?

Mating.......commonly between 10:00pm and 2:00am or later w matings being long or short......keep your eyes on them. Mine usually eclosed in the afternoon.

OK. The first night with one male and two females none paired up so since another male hatched today, I think I will hand pair them. What do you think?

Give it a try. I've only been successful once in the few times I've tried. If you do it, make sure her scent organ is out so the male is stimulated. It took me a few minutes to try. I once tried it for a lot longer.......to no avail. It seems to happen, if it's going to, rather quickly. Others probably have more experience in this than I.

Well, a pair did mate on their own but the other female is really beat up and she was much larger too.

If you get enough ova, I would love to try those out. I was successful with Automeris naranja many years ago, and this is one of the many from the SW that I have wanted to rear.
