Spring is in the air! It was a mild, sunny afternoon today here in Southeast England and I saw my first butterfly of the year on my allotment. It was a Comma (Polygonia c-album). The Bees have been around for a week or so now and I have heard reports of other Commas and also Brimstones (Gonepteryx rhamni) on the wing. Dave

In Luxembourg I was able to see my first butterfly already on second of March, this is 1 Month earlier than in 2009! It was a Nymphalis polychloros that I did not catch yet as I rated the population in my country as small and vulnerable. Last week I saw another butterfly in the city and it was N. polychloros again, it seems 2011 will be a good year for them and I might add one of them to my collection. Attachments:

Hello on sunny days during the cold months of december and januar I have seen Vanessa atalanta several times. They had broken wings and it shows that they were old specimens which were overwintering. Middle february I also saw overwintering Macroglossum stellatarum and two weeks ago a lot of Inachis io. As Vanessa atalanta, they were overwintering specimens. Here are the pics. Greetings

As we're talking about early dates for butterflies, it would be useful if you told us where you are.
