I just wanted to let collectors know that the Eastern Buckmoths, (Hemileuca maia), are on the wing in the mid-south of Eastern US. Temperate weather should result in good numbers this week. Look for them in Oak forests on warm days(temps above 60 deg.F) between the hours of 11:00am-3:00pm. Males fly earlier than females which are usually on the wing later in the day depositing egg-rings. Tom

Amazing. I've been looking for this moth for over 50 years here on the eastern coastal plain and have yet to find it. I made a concerted effort following beetlehorn's post looking in as many scrub oak areas I could find until mid December. There is a lot of controlled burning that takes place but it is not all in the same area or at one time. Perhaps it is more inland than here in Carteret County where it is most convenient for me to go looking. I'm soon to be 68 and hope to find this bug in the wild before I die.
