One thing I am always frustrated by whenever I'm blacklighting are the bats that are taking advantage of my setup. I always wonder what rare species they might be snatching away from my lights. Then there's the otherwise perfect specimen of whatever I'm after that has a chunk bitten out of the wings by some damn bat!...... Well, just a few nights ago I was checking my sheet and spotted a few nice moths, then as I turned to go to my tackle box I was surprised by a sudden swooping shadow. A huge Barred Owl came down and absolutely nailed one of the bats out of the air!! I was quite amazed to say the least. 45 minutes later that owl came back and stood guard on a post near my lights. It was one of my better nights and very memorable.

I would love to share pics with you guys. Next time that owl comes back I'll try to get a few photos. BTW, what is the easiest way to post pictures on this website using Windows 7? I just recently switched from Windows XP with which I shared lots of photos in the past.

I also have a problem with a bat eating the moths that come to my sheet. I don't know what kind it is but, it freaking huge. I find wings on the ground around my sheet. At first I wished it would get white nose syndrome but, then I just accepted the fact of its just hungry and doing what bats do. Send your owl friend up my way so it can eat my bat because it would be a owl just doing what it does!

I've never seen them go after bats, but there are several barred owls that visit the area near one of the outlying gas stations where I collect at night. I often see them perching on nearby traffic signs & have managed to get about 10 feet away from them. I've tried to take pictures with my point & shoot camera, but it doesn't do to well in the dark. They have such a hair raising call! I'll never forget the first time hearing them while camping in Louisiana. Here's a link to a Youtube video with the calls: .
